LONDON (Reuters) - Bad news for Coco and Blinko -- children don't like clowns and even older kids are scared of them.

The news that will no doubt have clowns shedding tears was revealed in a poll of youngsters by researchers from the University of Sheffield who were examining how to improve the decor of hospital children's wards.

The study, reported in the Nursing Standard magazine, found all the 250 patients aged between four and 16 they quizzed disliked the use of clowns, with even the older ones finding them scary.

"As adults we make assumptions about what works for children," said Penny Curtis, a senior lecturer in research at the university.

"We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable."

I  have to say I quite agree. I hated clowns as a child and detest them now. Ronald McDonald is a hate figure for me.:p

Does anyone actually like clowns or even find them funny?

Clowns are one of my three phobias, (the others being spiders and chickens) so I wholeheartedly concur with this study.

Clowns are okay, as long as they're in a circus ring ~ and they stay there.
They're not great once they're up close & personal.

I agree.

As a child I remember going to Ringling Bros. and they made the show complete. Out side of the circus thay look like strange people in stranger clothing. Nothing they did was as funny when they were not under the big top.

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.

Clowns are one of my phobias as well. Same with spiders, needles and the Easter bunny. As a kid I would flip out if there was a clown or an Easter bunny around. Not sure why, nothing bad ever happened, I just didn't like them. I even had a bunny rabbit as a kid. I have never understood the fear.

I suppose if you must be fearful of something clowns would be a good item to be afraid of. They aren't all that common so you don't have to worry about them much. Frankly I don't see any reason to have a fear of them and just enjoy the act they put on.
