A new high speed internet scheme by Time Warner

Time Warner currently charges customers a flat monthly rate for Internet access. According to reports Time Warner will test a new pricing model that creates a multi-tiered pricing plan based on broadband usage. Time Warner would put caps on usage and charge more should you use too much bandwidth based on your monthly plan. For example, if you view too many streamed online videos, buy too many songs from iTunes, or are a heavy user of P2P services than you might get hit with a Time Warner "overage charge."

Boy I hope this does not spread to other ISPs.

If they do that, they'll lose a lot of customers (myself included) who only have "high speed" internet for gaming and downloading. Which, AFAIK, is just about everyone who has it.

Smart move Time Warner.

I was just wondering if I should post about this...

Honestly it can be a double edged sword. People that leave torrent clients running 24/7 downloading illegal movies should pay more IMHO. Personally I just don't get it. I knew a guy that would download "pirated" movies the week the movie was released in theaters... usually some other language with subtitles, or hand held "recordings" of the movie from a camera. Utter #$#$ quality, but he could say he saw the movie (dumb way to save $7 IMHO).

On the flip side, say I pay for a subscription to a site that has "movies" . Here I am paying already for content, then they want to hit me for bandwidth too? HELLS no! Add to that subscription sites selling movies like Netflix / Amazon, so on... people will not pay for those subscriptions if they have to pay on top of it for bandwidth.

I can see lawsuits regarding this, and overall harming internet usage / progress at the same time.

I guess overall I am against it.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Yeah, I was at loss when I read that.

While other first-world countries now offering 50-100 mbps UNLIMITED  fiber optic or wireless internet connection,  ISPs here in the US is telling us to curb our activities.  What time warner is doing is a huge step backwards.

Time Warner should be upgrading its service like what Rolex is using up "in the mountains" (in my dreams at least)

I use my internet to download some shows from my native country (Philippines), Korean Dramas, and game shows and anime from Japan. All these won't see a light of day on cable or DVD release here in the US.

Charge by usage?  Yeah, that worked for AOL.   It worked so well, they had to go to flat monthly fee or fail.

Good idea, I hope they paid someone a lot of money to ignore history.

I bet the other ISP's are currently laughing their tulips off.

Nothing and this what some believe is the reason why Time Warner is testing out this new pricing plan.  Warner Studios recently announced the ability to download HD movies from their website, which of course is part of Time Warner.  I think it's based on the whole fact that there is a large push to introduce these "large downloads" in the mainstream media.

Though, while I believe this pricing plan is a bad idea, it will only really affect those that like download movies, and other heavy users of large downloads  It won't affect those that use their broadband connections for gaming.

The thing people should be worried about are the moves from the ISPs to get rid of network neutrality and start charging content providers for equal priority on the network with the ISP's own services.

Didnt Cox or someone else already start turning off high bandwidth users?

Honestly, Im not a bandwidth hog these days.  I do notice they are selling faster connections for $15-$40 more a month at TW too

They are just like everyone else. It's all about seeing how much they can charge before they begin to lose customers.
It's sux, but what are you going to do except not use whoever adopts this business model.
