An appliance I'd never thought we'd use...
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:15:48 AM »
Last fall, my girlfriend picked up a Juicer at a yardsale.  The seller got it as a wedding gift and had no use for it.  A $60 juicer was now ours for $5.

Over the past few weeks, we came across some recipes to make various health drinks.  We tried one we saw on a Dr Oz episode of Oprah, a "green drink" that included all kinds of things...but what really killed it was the cucumber.  I'm sorry, cucumber juice smells like (and tastes) like something terribly wrong.

One recipe we found that I really like is this...

2 Red Delicious Apples
8-12 baby carrots
1/4 of a lemon squeezed

Makes about 8 ounces of juice.  The carrot juice is pretty well masked behind the apple.  The lemon juice really brings the apple juice out.

I usually make this when I get home from the gym.

Of course, the kids love to help, quick to rummage through the refrigerator and say "Can we put this in???"  (Kayla wanted to juice a 3 Musketeers bar)  And of course, the kids wont drink whatever concoction they create.

Anyone else have and use one of these things?

I never, never thought we'd use this thing.

Banana, Strawberry jam, egg.  I leave it in the freezer before going jogging for 30-45min.

We got a really nice juicer for a wedding gift. It is still boxed up in the pantry somewhere. After reading your post, I am going to pull it out tomorrow and come up with my own stuff. I am thinking, blueberry's, strawberry's, bananas, coconut and kiwi. For some reason that sounds good to me. So I am going to try it.

This is why we never used ours.  You spend all of the time to put all of that stuff in there and you always seemed to get very little out of it (and had to clean up afterwards).  It is just too easy to pull the big bottle of juice out of the fridge and pour a big 20oz glass.

I like all the gadgets. I don't care if I ever use them, though.  My kids (who help in the kitchen very, very often) love the gadgets... including the juicer.

Takes them FOREVER to squeeze enough orange juice to drink (which works out for me... because I can then cook uninterrupted while they're busy juicing).  But they juice lemons for us to add onto meals while I'm preparing to cook them.

*edit*
The only one I really don't like them to use is the old hand-crank meat grinder.  They vice it too tight onto the table, which leaves dents.  Then they stick anything & everything into the thing.   I have found in it: dogfood, play-dough, cheese, and some unidentifiable items.

We got one from a couple who got it as a wedding gift and we used it once.  The cleanup isn't worth the effort.  It's so much easier to go to the store and buy a jug of something. Heavy pulp OJ is my choice...I like to chew my juice.

Guys you just need to fill it with hot soapy water as soon as you empty it.  Most of the recent ones have an auto clean mode.

Recipe for carrot juice:

Wash carrot, eat.

Recipe for apple juice:

Wash apple, eat.

Works for almost any fruit or vegetable.

Some are more complicated and go with the alternate pattern illustrated by:

Recipe for orange juice:

Peel orange, eat.                                    (Not the peel)

Melons:

Cut melon in half, scoop out seeds, eat everything but seeds and wrapper.

I like orange peel.

I just posted recipes ...I didn't ask YOUR whoopee opinion about orange peel. Get the difference, Jerk? :D

If I waited for someone to ask for my opinion I'd never have the pleasure of giving it. You should try orange peel, I hear it's good for constipation.  :p
