Attention bowlers.

Does anyone here bowl on a league?  I bowl on the wensday night winter florida league.  I currently own 2 bowling balls but I have had 4. I gave away my 12 pound tornado because I needed to make space for my newest ball (a brunswick fury).  I was throwing my tornado at 20 mph down lane and it hit like a ton of bricks.  But now I am just going to stick with my brunswick "The Angle" the original one,  my hammer "black widow", and my brunswick "fury".
If you are a bowler, post here what bowling ball(s) you have and your average.  My average is 168.

I bowl two leagues, Monday NFL and Wednesday Mixed.   I usually have between a 172 and 182 average.  This year I pretty much suc and have dropped down to 165 average.  I have 8 bowling balls
Brunswick Total Inferno, Monster Slayer, Monster Bruiser, 2 Power Grooves (Black, Purple) Columbia White dot, old Blue Hammer and a green Nail.
All of them are 15 pound balls except for the Inferno which is 16 pounds.

I started bowling leagues 1982 and my first bowling ball was an Angle.
For the last 7 years I have been a director on the Greater Austin Area USBC and help run Youth bowling on Saturdays in Bastrop, I also coach

I need to work on my game because we are going to USBC Nationals in Albuquerque New Mexico in March and then the Austin city tournament in April, Texas State tournament in April, Ten Pin Association tournament in June

My son is 17 and started bowling 4 years ago.  He currently has a 170 average and uses a Fury and a Black Widow both 15 pounds.

Started bowling in a league this winter since I'm finally in one place for a while and have the chance to do so.  Averaging a 176 so far using crappy lane balls.

Used to have my own ball but the thumb hole was cut at a bad angle and it hurt a ton to use.  I've been looking to get at least one new strike ball, and maybe a lighter spare ball if I think I need it.  Any suggestions for what's a good ball these days?

A round one... :D

Seriously Stang,  I dont think anyone can honestly say what is the best ball to get for you.   There are so many different balls out there now with different cover stocks, weight block designs, etc...  plus each person has their own different delivery and lane conditions vary between the different alleys.   What works good for me might be horrible for you.
There are balls that are designed to perform better for dry lanes, heavy oil lanes, Medium oil lanes, Medium to Dry, Medium to Heavy oil, oil breakdown, and any other lane conditions.

I tell you the same thing I tell everybody else that asks me this question.
1.  Talk to your fellow bowlers in the bowling alley you bowl in.  Find out what they use.   Find out what Pro shop they trust.

2.  Go to your local pro shop and talk to the people that sell and drill the balls.   If you're real lucky you have more than one bowling alley/Pro shop.   If they want to make a sale they'll work with you.  Tell them you want a ball but not certain of which ball.  Some pro shop guys will watch you bowl a few frames to get an idea of the type of ball you can use and make some recommendations.  If possible try to get a second opinion before you invest $100 or more on a bowling ball.  Yes the owner of the pro shop may have a bias towards one ball manufacture and may even try to push a certain ball.   Another option is to buy a used ball.  Alot of people buy the newest ball out there, try it for a few weeks and decide they dont like it and trade it in at the pro shop for a new ball; what costs $150 new you might be able to get for $100 or less.

3.  The best ball in the world does you no good if its not drilled properly, (thats probably why you had problems with your thumb in your old ball.)

4.  What weight ball is important too.   If you've been using house balls then you can probably get one thats 1 pound heavier because a ball drilled for your hand will be easier to use and will feel a little lighter than a house ball.

After all that, If you throw a straight ball then I would go with a Columbia white dot.  If you have the ability to hook or curve your ball get a Brunswick Fury or Power Groove balls.   I only recommend those because I use them and they work for me.

Go to you local bowling alley and see if the pro shop has demo balls. That is the best way to find yourself the perfect ball.  I tried several bowling balls before I found the blackwidow which I throw out on to the right of the lane for a huge hook into the pocket.

I bowled leagues years ago. Bowled left handed but carried a left and right hand ball. My average was always high 180s. My high game was 242 so I never approached a perfect game. I do have a friend that has 4 perfect games under his belt.

I have two balls; they only weigh about a pound each though.  I have to wear extra big pants; I can't imagine what you have to wear with 12 pound balls!
