Computer Case

I've heard a considerable amount about the computer mainboards etc., but what about the case? Are there any cases that stand out for ease of use?

3 main things to consider IMO when looking at a case.

1 Power supply is it enough? I wouldn't even consider building a modern box with less than a 500 watt.

2 Cooling, CPU's have made some improvements, but SATA drives, and Video cards continue to get hotter and hotter. You need a case that can seriously do the cooling job.

3 ease of use, side come off easy? good access to all spaces?
Lots of 51/4" drive slots? From there it goes down to things like where HD's are mounted and ease of swapping drives.

My last system the HD actually got mounted in the bottom 5 1/4" drive slot with a hd cooler blowing cold air over it. Above that a Dvd burner, a blank space for airflow (filler plate that I drilled full of holes, and mounted a front access USB port into.) And finally the 2nd SATA Dvd burner.

Don't skimp on a case thats going to hold 500$ or more of parts.
That being said the 64$ Mwave case i'm using is working fine. I have 2 of them, one is 2 years old.

The case I have NZXT Lexa case is the most money I've spent on a case before.  I've had it almost two years and I'm still happy with it.  Only downside is putting in 3.5 drives (that have external access like a floppy drive or card reader) is a pain in the butt.

Aluminum cases are nice for two main reasons.  They are lighter and also dissipate heat better than stainless steel.  Newegg customer reviews are great for finding out about how a case is functionally.  You may find a cool looking one, but a review may tell you the access is poor or its crappy materials, etc..

Some handy features to have in cases are:
- uses 120mm fans (these move the same amount of air as smaller 80mm, but run at lower RPM's so they are quieter)
- Front USB/Firewire, most cases have these now.
- Motherboard tray (allows you to slide/take out a tray from the case to mount the motherboard on the tray instead of mounting it directly inside the case.  It's easier to installation of CPU's).
- Rail system (they attach 'rails' to the side of your 5.25 and 3.5 drive so you can slide them their slots instead of reaching into you case and unscrewing the drives.)
- Fan Filters (a basic little filter between the exterior of the case and an intake fan.  I can testify that these work awesome.  They really keep the dust out, especially with two cats.  I rarely have to clean out of case for dust (maybe once a year)).

It's good to find a case that looks cool and matches your stuff.  I've done pretty well with a Silver/Black color scheme and all my devices using Blue LEDs.

Having good airflow is essential.  You'll want a case that keeps your stuff nice and cool.

Screwless Design cases can be hit or miss.  Some cases are 'screwless' to access inside the case, but their design can be really poor.  Their tabs to pull on or whatever may be too hard or too flimsy.  It's good to read reviews for this.

Fulmar,

I read the reveiw on that case and the guy said he had to install his PS upside down. Any issues with that? What is your ps?

BTW, awesome looking case.

I just built a computer using an Antec 900 case. It requires a seperate power supply but that's not a bad thing. The case looks great, has a top 200mm fan, 2 120mm front fans and 1 120 mm back fan - all run incrdibly quiet.

The front bay design is superb and flexible. I highly recommend this case.

Nope, I've had two different PSU's in the case, no problems.

The real issues are "tooless" design, ease of access and cooling potential. Truthfully you can get all three in some pretty cheap cases but you pay for quality of material and workmanship. If you can afford it you'll usually get better quality for not alot more money. IMO never buy a case/PS combo unless you have no other choice. A good case/PS combination will run you $150 and up. Your better off with a cheaper case and better PS if you have to choose.
