Looking to get a Handgun
I'm looking into getting a Hand gun for some range shooting and such. I've been looking around at various calibers, and a 9mm looks like the best bet, but I haven't ruled out anything just yet. I don't want to spend too much, 400 or so.

The weight of the gun doesn't matter to much, just don't want something that will break my wrists with the recoil.  Anyone have any recommendations?

I already have an antique .22 rifle, and a .22 pistol isn't out of the question, but I'd like to shoot something a little larger.

Have you had any training with firearms?

If not go get some before you buy anything, go rent guns and see what you enjoy shooting.

price of bullets...

9s 40s 45s..

9-45 are the most mass produced

9s are the cheapest....that makes  a big decision in choice..they will all work for defense

.22 is the cheapest to shoot but you could also buy a .357 and practice with .38 rounds which cost about the same as 9mm I believe. Then you would still have some real stopping power if ever needed.

What Iron said.  Also as far as a first gun goes a .357 is a good first gun... lots of choices, lots of ammo choice, fairly inexpensive (at least back when I had mine, 357s were slightly less expensive than 44s and 45s)

If you don't practice that much, you're better off getting a wheelgun.  I recommend a .357 MAG.

38s are not that cheap around here.

9MM is the cheapest but nothing but 22 is really cheap anymore.

I plan on it.

Just as soon as we are in the new place and I have a spare room to set the stuff up.

Make sure the room is not carpeted, and don't use a vacuum cleaner on spilled powder.

You guys really need to consider on how often the person is willing to Go to the Range before you recommend a handgun.  I have seen inmates escape because the officer did not practice enough.
