« on: January 29, 2008, 10:22:16 PM »
Just bought, and am now downloading this game. I've been wanting to get this game for a while now and now that I have it I want to know if anyone here plays Red Orchestra, and what is your name? I could use all the help I can get .

This doesn't mean I'll be quiting AH2, so don't get your hopes up :D .

I enjoyed the tank battle portion of the game, thoroughly.  However, it's infantry system sucks donkey....you know what.  If the infantry was better in that game I would have probably paid for it, I only did the Free Steam Weekends and found it wasn't worth my money.

I have a completely opposite reaction to RO; I think infantry combat is excellent while tank is horrible and arcade.

I have to agree with Russian. The tank combat was basically tacked on while RO was still a mod for UT2004. They've never really gotten it right.

But really, for the money, RO can't be beat. The infantry combat is great, and with the 3 mods that are (fairly) close to release, it will only get better.

TxDad plays (or played?) it. I'll ask him to sign on to the BBS sometime & read your thread.
*edit* whatever it is, he enjoys playing it quite a bit.

I wish Tripewire (makers of RO) would announce their next project already. They won an Unreal 3 engine license and have been working on a new game. Of course I hope it's Red Orchestra 2. Love RO and played it since beta many years ago. Of course CoD4 has my undivided attention right now for online play.

My feelings as well. The tank is fun but more arcade than sim. The infantry is pure sim.

I played the Day of Defeat mod for Half-Life for about 5 years, competitively in leagues.  It may be my bias but the player movements were much more fluid and allowed for a faster infantry type game.  I felt that RO's infantry was too much like Operation Flashpoint

Operation Flashpoint...another great tactical infantry sim.... :D

I tried DOD and other arcade shooters and there are just too many things I don't like in them. With OFP and RO, realism is just about right level to create immersion of being there. But argument of taste are pointless...play what you like.  :aok

I won't argue the realism aspect.  I can understand your dislike of the Tanks for their lack of realism.  I never played Day of Defeat for it's realism aspect, I played it for the gameplay.  Mainly its a personal preference.  More realism in certain games adds to the gameplay, while in others it takes away from it.  It's a fine line to walk.

Back in the Day of Defeat community, the competitive fan base was quite separated from the 'pubbers'.  Pubbers were players who just played DoD in public online servers and that was it.  Their demands were for a game with more realistic controls and additions.  For us league players (who competed against other clans in leagues, tournaments, and http://www.thecpl.com/ ) the addition to realism was sacrificing competitive gameplay.

The battle between League players and Pubbers raged for years.  Myself being a League player blamed the Pubbers for the demise of the game upon it's newest installation Day of Defeat: Source.

Anyways, I'll have to cut this rant short as I have 5 years worth of angst locked away.

Having spent at least a little time running around with an M-16 and full web gear and helmet playing infantry (and by little I was 19D and not 11B) there are limits to how "fluid" you can be. In too many games you just float along at full speed putting an easy kill cross hair on target. That can be fun, but it is a bit arcadish. In real life crap's tugging at you, shaking up and down, catching on stuff poking you... Going prone is a bit of a PITA except with a combat drop. But then getting up and moving out is not totally smooth. Now it's not like wearing one of those fake sumo costumes by any means, and you overlook much of it if the adrenalin is flowing and you are focused on where you are trying to go and what you are trying to do. So I don't see a little less less fluid as a bad thing from a realism standpoint.

Where sighting is concerned and manipulating a bolt action -- again, far more realistic with RO. Frankly, you see complaints about the sights but guess what... a lot of those sights do suck. Particularly the k98k. However, I wouldn't mind a shoot from the hip circular site of a fixed size -- say 1 inch in diameter on the screen. Less accurate at a distance more accurate up close. In real life shooting from the hip is more intuitive than I find it in the game, but still not easy beyond 10 yards or so.

Edit: I see you opinion on the league aspect, but again, this is a discussion of RO and not league play with other games. Of course, those who like a more arcadish experience -- and I play plenty of arcade FPS as well -- might not like RO.

RO is a great game - the best WW2 FPS out there, probably the most realistic FPS.

However, the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2 is getting some attention from me. They've basically gone for the realism in a big way - they even have British weapons and vehicles modelled! You have to work in squads and there are some really nice touches including 1000lb JDAM weaponry available to the commander every hour the game passes (they removed the most zoomed in satellite view and artillery). You can also paint laser targets for aircraft to use.
