Problem with upgrades
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:51:38 PM »
Today I was given some free parts from a friend who just bought a new computer. I was given an AMD Athlon 2200 and a Radeon 1600 pro. Both of these parts worked fine in his computer. I installed both parts and when I booted up I was given a screen of blue/green/yellow horizontal lines. So I took out the Radeon and put my old card back in and booted up. I got to the screen where you can select Normal/Safe mode/ etc. Choosing any options there caused a freeze. So I took out the Athlon 2200 and put my old cpu back in. Everything is working fine now. Does anyone have any idea why these problems are happening with the my newer parts and how can I fix them? My old card is a Geforce 6200 OC made by BFG. And my old processor is an Athlon 2100. I was also given a stick of 256 megs of ram which works fine.

Do you still have your old ram installed also? Is it of different speed than the new stick you got?

Sounds like either your ram can't handle the new processor or your motherboard is not compatible for some reason. You should always write down all your system parts when you ask for help, for example it's crucial to know which motherboard you have and if you have other sticks of ram installed.

Sounds like a problem with Windows. You can replace major parts like the CPU and vidcard without reinstalling windows from scratch.

Case in point:

I built both my coumputer and my GFs. There are 2 differences in the builds (apart from the cases), hers has a faster CPU while mine has a better vidcard. While we were waiting on her new HDD to arrive I tried plugging mine into her machine. Got the same problems you are describing.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your post and you are doing a fresh install of Windows, give reinstalling windows a shot.

I tried working with him last night on it.  For the video card now working, he was not plugging in the additional power connector it needed (a floppy drive power plug) for the X1600 Pro.  Last I talked to him he had night tried this, but hopefully it solves the video card problem.

As for the CPU, I know he has some way off brand (I've never heard of it, I'm serious its some wierd brand) motherboard that is probably a POS.

I think it's more important to get that X1600 working (upgrade from his 6200) over getting the XP 2200 (over his 2100) working.
