Yak 9T

Took this up today and was looking at E6B -
Was down to  half  fuel and noticed my weight.

6300 lbs

For reference I lifted in a full fuel  A6M5 it it was

6100 lbs

Found this amazing as the Reisen is usually thought as being amazingly light to compensate for it's poor power. This is 600 lbs lighter than a Spit IX at also .5 fuel, 700lbs lighter than the Hurri IIc at .5 fuel,  and 2300 lbs lighter than the N1k at .5 fuel.

I don't know what engine our 9T has but assume its Klimov M-105PF I get from wiki it produces

903 kW (1,210 hp) at 2,600 rpm for takeoff
880 kW (1,180 hp) at 2,700 m (8,860 ft) cruise

This is far less than the N1k
Nakajima Homare NK9H radial engine, 1,990 hp (1,480 kW)

Soda's article on the 9T is not very flattering, calls it unstable and should not get into a slow fight with it but it's numbers to me would make me think it wasn't horrible. The Gonzo page also shows that flaps up it turns very well, and even flaps down it's radius is 20% larger than the N1K and slightly not as bad against the Spit XVI and F4U-1 flaps down.

Is this is a capable fighter then or is it that much inferior to the 9U in handling that it's poor choice for fighting.

Fly it like a 109 and you'll be fine...Yaks are a joy to fly. The have a lot of character and down low and very nimble.

compared to the 9U, the T sucks!

it's got a very heavy nose, and it's very sluggish when you're really going at it. it can turn quite tight, but it's a real handful when you do!

You really feel the weight of that cannon. Its sluggish and makes the aiming with that 37mm pretty hard. Interresting plane for LVT hunting as that 37mm got HE rounds that works well on light armored vehicules. Not to mention its corect handling and speed.

I didn't check the Yak9u weight but it feels way lighter.

Nope. Only the Il2 and the Hurricane MkIID have AP cannons.

Yup.  9T isn't in the same class as the 9U, don't make the mistake of thinking that they're anywhere near comparable in performance.  But you will surprise a lot of people when you're flying a 9T.

Just make sure to get real close before you yell "Fire" and touch the match to the cannon.

With some practice you can hit stuff (mostly bombers) at about 1.2-1.3 away.  I had a hard fight a few weeks ago in a valley against an F6F and P38J and the F6 dove and started climbing out and I tossed one round out there and popped his wing at just over 1k.  Ended up getting both of them and landed the kills, just takes a lot of practice.  Kind of like the guys that fly those German rides with the watermelon guns in the nose!  :D

With a bit of alt you should have no problem hitting bombers from 800 and out.

Like sketch says it takes practice. Start offline vs the b24, don't just follow him around dead 6. But line up shots where you dive in on him from above.

Couple of taps in a wing should do him in. Try to stay away from the fuse, lots of empty space there, they can soak up the rounds. Also from above or below you have a much much bigger target.

I used it some last campaign and the gun is certainly very fun.

It can be frustrating too, when you miss that plane 100m in front of you - but that is made up for when you dismantle a flight of three bombers from 1k out , or pop off a wing with one round fired during a fight with a Spitfire.

Was just look at performance - I think generally I'll fly the -9u more though, and take out the -9T for bombers on occassion.

I note the Yak 9T we currently have no longer has WEP.

My understanding was that the M-105PF did have an overrev WEP capability and that this was the unit used in the Yak9 T,D etc.

The Yak 3 (and some Yak 9M) used the VK-105PF2 which infact was the same as the M-109PF but now continuously rated at the previous WEP rpm. (2600rpm)

Sorry upper boost was at 2700 rpm on the VK105PF and it was the same as the M-105PF. (not 109PF)
