weird Squeaker fix for Call of Duty 4
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:40:00 AM »
Just bought Call of Duty 4 and installed it as soon as I got home.  Before playing, made sure that I had patched the game up to 1.5.  Now I was set to play or so I thought.

Started up the game and let it run through the credits and the intro movie until I got to the main menu.  Went to options to change the video and audio settings and when I would apply the settings the game would crash.  Restarted the game and didn't want to go through the credits and intro so I skipped them.  Mistake.  Game crashes if you try and skip the credits and intro.

Went to the Infinity forums and found out that I needed to rename a Miles sound file.  Did that and it fixed the game crashing if I skipped the credits and intro.  Now I was ready to play.

First mission is the tutorial, breeze through the shooting training and I'm off to see Capt. Price.  I walk down the tarmac and then turn to the hanger Price is in and game crashes.  No matter how many times I tried, the game always crashed that point.  I uninstalled and reinstalled by video drivers and the game and still no joy so I hit the forums again.

I find a thread about the problem and see that some have posted possible work arounds so I tried them.  None of them worked.  I get to the very last post and it's in your typical squeaker poser elite speak.  The kid said to plug in a microphone and the game won't crash if you try and skip the credits or when you go see Price for the first time.  No way I thought, what a lame fix.  Reminded me of the time when EA got India AWARs and one suggested a play reinstall his mouse drivers to fix his video problem.   Typical POS squeaker I thought.

So I give up and was set to return CoD in the morning, I had it with this game.  I plug in my mic and headphones and log into AH2 for a few flights and logged for the night.  Before I was going to hit the sack, I thought I'd try just one more time and see if CoD would play.

Start the game up, skip credits and start a new game.  Go through the shooting tutorial and off to meet Price.  Game doesn't crash and I get to talk to Price.  Game works, I'm stoked!  Figured eventually I'd get the game to run and then I looked down and saw that my mic and headphones were still plugged in.  No way...so I closed CoD and unplugged the mic.  Restarted CoD and started a new game.  Go talk to Price, game crashes.  Plug in mic, restart game and start new game and go talk to Price and game doesn't crash.

Who would have thought the little squeaker was right?

Meanwhile, I bought COD4, opened my CD tray, started my X360, and enjoys COD4 for over 400 hours with no bug or frame rate issues.

Consoles are like Macs, but worse.  Expensive and uncustomizable.  You can give them a mouse and keyboard nowadays, but they've still got a long way to go.

I was just thinking that. BTW, I haven't seen you on much. You should come frag with us.

All the problems the guys are saying they are having with the PC version of CoD 4, makes me glad I got it for the 360. I am glad you got it to work AKAK, have fun, it is one of the best shooters out there right now...until Rainbow Six Vegas two drops in March that is.

You don't need a mouse to play shooters. I couldn't control the dam mini stick, but after only a couple of months it's becoming second nature. When you see how fast some people online can pop you in the head while doing backflips, I have no doubt that the best of COD4 Xbox would smack mouse users on PC.

Moot, Consoles can't be upgraded, and so what? I spend more freacking money to keep my PC runing the latest game with some kind of descent frame rate a year, that it cost me to buy a new console every 3-4 years ... and I don't have the fear to know if the game will even start :rofl

Anyway, stay in your old ways like my grand'ma that refuses to use a CD player.

You are right BBBB, I'm away from home an average of 80 to 90h a week. I do have now a better understanding of the game, since I was brand new to shooters.

I really like team hardcore deathmatch the best, and have a blast there. Uzi with silencer serves me well. Sniper and Anti-sniper is very relaxing, I fancy it too. Especially since it seems to upsets people so much.

I am still new to S&D, and Domination since I don't know where the objectives are, and the best way to attack/protect them.
Dat jugs bro.

Yea, I got a week after it came out and runs no problem. The ending to the SP campaigns pretty cool. MPs fun, except we need bigger maps.

Frenchy is right. At first I couldn't play with a controller, after a few days of screwing with it, it became second nature. In fact I think using a controller is far better than using a mouse and key board. Using your fingers to move around is far more precise than moving your arm, wrist, hand and finger, to move around.

Using a PC to game with is OK, but like Frenchy said you spend a lot of money to keep your PC up to spec with the latest games. You spend easily three to four times the amount I do on a new console every few years.

Then there is the cheat thing. Cheaters are almost non-existent on X-box live. MS does a scan every so often and catches all the modded boxes. They ban your account, you will never be able to connect that box to XBL again. That is why the Xbox 360 lends it's self so well to tournament play.

The only thing I play on my PC now is flight sims and Americas Army. Other than that, it is X360 or PS3 for me.

You're one of the lucky few.  From what I saw on the Infinity forums, the PC version was released really buggy.

How is multiplayer?

Hey, I guess they're right. Squeakers, although dim and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose.

Nah Frenchy.. I just buy games a while after they've come out (a few exceptions aside), so they're cheaper and run well on affordable hardware.  Paying half a thousand bucks for one component is crazy, but if you stick to regularly priced parts and consider all the other things you do with a computer, it's still better than any playskool macbox. :p
Consoles may start getting interesting when their games aren't so dumbed down for their audience and interface.
The biggest turn off for me is not being able to hack stuff like you can on PCs.
