Mirrors?
« on: February 04, 2008, 11:42:16 AM »
I'm new so I dont know how often its brought up, but wouldnt mirrors be a great addition?

I have the Trackir which is great except with a few of the planes that have large seatbacks. Mirrors would help a great deal with seeing around those backs!

a Great WW2 German ACE once said about mirrors in the plane. yes it gave you a warning of enemy behind you, but by the time you could see it in the mirror it was already too late.  and he said it would vibrate really bad.

Think it was Gunther Rall.

Jerry Collinsworth said the same thing about the Spitfire mirrors - by the time you could see something useful in them, you were already being fired upon.

And it's been said that to do them in the game would cut frame rate in half, as the sim would have render the "world" from 2 seperate views (one of which is shown in the mirror).

Besides, most WWII pilots would have given up any number of very important body parts to be able to see out the back of his anywhere anywhere near as easily as we do!

If we did get mirrors they wouldn't vibrate, I can tell you that right now. Most likely because coding a "vibrate" script would reduce your frame rate.

However I know we're not going to get our mirrors, because Hitech has said in the past that it will absolutely and totally kill our frame rates. And I must agree with the rest, "By the time you see the opponent, it's too late."

And remember that a four inch mirror might be about three-quarters of an inch on your screen. Only when you're zoomed all the way in with the bracket keys do you have a 1:1 ratio of size to the real aircraft and surroundings.

The settings in TIR can be set to look around the headrest too. HTC has said it is way to much work for such a minor game tweak, so its no to mirrors.

I use TIR with the Infra red whatsit.

The fact that this is on the side of my head means that I can look around the rear bulk head easier from one side than I can from the other.

The other really impressive thing about AH is that if i tilt my head  a bit into the cockpit (presumably inline with the cockpit glass) I can see round even a bit further.
