Strafing Question
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:31:32 PM »
Kind of a newbie question..

Can you kill softer town buildings by strafing them from the air?  Let's say I've wiped out 90% of the buildings in a town with a bomber.  Can I drop down and finish off the rest with my .50 cal's?

Or is this a labor-intensive (or ineffective) endeavor?

Yes you can take out town buildings with .50 cals.  If you're going to be using your bombers, it will depend on how many guns you can get on whatever building your shooting at, but in general you can take out a town building with a three second burst, something like that, or at least that's what it is like for me in a fighter.

Yes, you can kill town buildings by strafing. They dont even need to be soft.

An undamaged town building requires approximately 250 .50 cal hits.

You can kill buildings with 50cals. They don't have to be soft at all. Most people use a 110 to kill a town building though, much more effective with the 20mm/30mm combo though.

Yes you can and is in fact a common tactic and yet not preferred. Once caught 3 sets of b24s straffing a town in my handy dandy osty. What fun!!

You can kill any ground object by straffing.  I've killed VH's several times with the .50's in an F6F-5, although it takes just about every round.

A8's 30mm are potent, but have not much ammunition.

A VH takes approximately 2800lbs of ordonance.
A .50 cal bullet is worth 1.17 lbs vs. structures - you do the math ;)

The best resource in all of Aces High may be the trainers site. The link is in my signature. Also, Lusche doesn't seem to have any fear about exploring the game or the resources available.

2.393 ish bullets
2.400 x 1.17 = ish ( it is enough)

30 mm =  0.50 x 2 = 20 mm x 2 = 30 mm ish

how much in lbs is the 30mm?

Just checked, according to to trainners  pages it taked 3.100 lbs Fh, Bh, Vh.

2.400 x 1.17 would not be enough

The trainers page do use the ame table HTC provides us in the Help Section. The 3x 1000lbs is a rounded value for bombing, putting that much on target ensures destruction.
However, if you go offline you can check the exact values yourself. Options-Arena Setup-Objects-Object Settings. You will find that a hangar has a hardness (1000lbs bombs) of  2.7812. And MA settings are running at that default value.
