Wirlbelwind gun option for Flakpanzer IV
« on: February 09, 2008, 08:00:24 PM »
There have been a number of discussions recently at how difficult ground operations have become.   The odds against GV's seemed to be stacked higher than ever.   Certainly the introduction of the B25H has been bad for GV's.   Some folks are now starting to become skilled at flying these against Ground Vehicles, and doing a lot of damage.

I think at this point that GV's need something new to help get things back into a better balance again.   Easiest and most obvious thing that I can think of is to give the Flakpanzer IV a new gun option.   Instead of it only having the single 37mm Ostwind option, allow it to also now have the 4 x20mm Wirbelwind gun option too.

This would allow GV units to employ a combination of different types of firepower for defense.   The four 20mm's would also be a good option what would fit right between the M16 and the Ostwind in caliber.

It seems to me that this would not be a difficult enhancement to make.   Everything about the Flakpanzer IV would remain the same.   You would simply offer a different gun option.   That is all.

While one can argue that the Flakpanzer IV was never produced in sufficient numbers to really effect the war, the truth is that there were 2.5 times as many Wirbelwinds made, compared to Ostwinds.

Please give the GV grunts a break, and give us this new gun option.

agree, a b-25 and IL-2 can pretty much clear any gv's as fast as they spwan. Note the IL-2 is how i kill most GV's and is always in my top 5-6 used planes.

No need to perk, it is actually a previous version of the Ostwind that we already have.  The whirblewind does not have near the range or hitting power as the Ostwind already in game.  Although it obviously has a much higher rate of fire.  If I was to place it in the pecking order, it would probably fall somewhere between the Ostwind and the M16 in it's capabilities.

Speaking as someone who lives for ground attack, 190 F8 being my preferred ride, I would love to see something like this.

It does fill the empty position between the M16 and the Ostwind, I can't tell you the number of times I have had a M16 hose me as I bomb the Panzer/M3/M4 he is trying to protect and I fly away to return and rocket him into oblivion and most of the time, I suffer no damage.

No need to perk it and it would cause a change in some of the tactics employed, by some of the players, Low bombers hedgehopping versus 5 or 6 Wirbelwinds rapid fire 20mm guns and the 37 mm of the field guns or Osti's and it may happen less and less, something I would like to see, if you care to know.

Exactly, it would give us something in between these two extremes.

The M16 dies so easily that it is practically useless.

But if planes had to face a combination of fire from both Ostwinds and Wirbelwinds, that would at least give the GV's a little bit better of a chance.

These things would really find a home in the early arena.  With only thin skined M16s available for air defense (no Osties) they would sure be a welcomed addition.
