Round per gun options?
« on: February 12, 2008, 08:53:47 AM »
We can chose fuel load outs, have plenty of options for air to ground ord but cant choose ammunition load outs (with notable exceptions to the Jug, 38, etc).

What Im after is the ability to reduce the ammunition count on the early war pea shooters to zero to save weight which, in the case of the A5, for example, would be significant.

Id like to be able to select (using the above example), 250RPG of 20mm and 0RPG of 7.92mm.

Any reason why this cant be implemented?

First, the entirety of the 190a5's 7mm ammo load is only a little more than 100lbs. If you like the 190s, please read this thread:

http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=197645

It's got some good info on the weights.

Second, we have historic ammo loads. It wasn't common practice (ever??) to remove 3/4 the ammo in a 190a5. Oh, and if you check the weights (see the link above) removing all the 7mm and half the 20mm will still only save you a little over 200lbs (most of this would be 20mm weight) on an 8000lb + airframe.

Frankly, it's better to have more ammo than to have none, when in a fight.

Ah, I had no idea the weight penalty was that slight.

Thanks for the link.

Take alook at your E6B when you're in flight some times. It's quite interesting. It shows your plane weight. I did all the testing in the other link using the E6B readout.

Actually I am not so sure AH uses "historical" ammo loads. I have understood that AH uses the maximum ammo loads given by the manufacturers manuals.

In many occasions, historically, less than maximum loads were loaded, e.g. to reduce the chance of belts jamming etc.

It is quite ok by me to use the manufacturers' maximums, but it might be nice to be able to decide yourself how much to load and e.g. the types, ratios and sequences of the rounds :)

That doesn't work on games that allow it. Too many folks exploit it.

If anything blauk, AH doesn't give you as much ammo as historically was available!

Our 190a's MG/FF only have 60 rpg. The drum was repacked and able to hold 90 rounds in the same space in early 1941 [EDIT late 1941?], so all 190as should have 90 rounds instead of 60.

Our 109g6 and g14 have been suffering with a 150 round option for the main gun. G14 can have the 30mm but the g6 was stuck with no other options. The only nose gun I've read about any jamming on 109s was the experimental MG/FF in the 109E (and D) that was rejected and removed. Since the F onward the jamming had been corrected.

You just don't hear many stories of LW planes returning to base with jammed guns. I can think of only one, and it was a Ta152 where all 3 guns cut out in a couple of seconds.

The gondolas for the longest time had 125 rounds in 'em despite primary source documents showing 140 rounds.

That's just a few LW planes!

I do recall some 190A pilots removing the cowl guns to save weight, but I recall these were mostly variants of the 190A that were being used for attack or bombing, and had other gear onboard. They weren't the "pure fighter" version we have in AH.
