Bessie Coleman. In none of my kids schools have I ever seen anything about Bessie Coleman during black history month. MLK is plastered on any open wall-space (which is all well & good... except he isn't the only black guy who ever did anything remarkable or made a difference).

So let's hear it for Bessie, teachers! Add her to your study plans; print out a picture & bio on her as well!

lets hear it for all teachers.....

I think every fireman, cop and teacher in this country should start at 100K per year.

we'll raise these funds by imposing an ***hole tax on every future attorney who passes the bar.

Some ignorant folks think that blacks only did anything during february.... lol

My wife is an English teacher at a high school here in Ga. The school is 89% black, every month is pretty much black history month.

Quoted for truth. Black history month, like all black colleges and all black television are some of the oddities of our society that I can not get my head around. They want to be equal, but at the same time operate by different rules.

Agree with it or not, there have been some amazing people in our history that were black ~ and a great part of the reason that their actions were so great is because they had to battle not only the 'normal' life struggles that every person had, but also had to achieve every small (or large) success while being told they weren't allowed to even strive for success, and had every stumbling block placed before them.

Is it that way today? No.
Is it appropriate to remember with respect & admiration those who cut the trail for those people today who can run the path freely? Yes
Is Bessie one of those folks? Yes, absolutely.

Some other folks who didn't get the recognition they deserved were the Tuskegee Airmen. There are only a few left but much is owed to those guys.

It's not the color of your skin that defines you, it's the acts you commit while in that skin that defines you. Unless you are only defined in your mind by the color of your skin.

Lemme help you out.

There's no such thing as an "all black college." What you're probably thinking of are historically black colleges. These were founded in the south when African-Americans were not allowed to attend state colleges, either by law (prior to Brown v. Board of Education) or by discriminatory admissions (well into the 1970s). These colleges and universities were established because they were the only way for black students to get a higher education. Tuskegee University in Alabama is an example.

Historically black colleges are not "all black" and have always been open to white students (where the law allowed). Overall, about 1/3 of the students and faculty at these colleges are not black. Some of these schools consider race as one factor in admissions but never the only or overriding factor (the same as "historically white colleges") in contributing to diversity.

Let me help you out. Every so often the AJC has a nice write up about a white kid, or an Asian kid who tried to enroll in one of the fine "historically black" colleges, only to be denied for "academic reasons".

Morehouse College is over 95% Black, Spelman College is over 96% black, Clark Atlanta University is over 93% black, Dillard University 99.3% black and last but not the least..lets not forget Johnson C. Smith University who is 99.9% black. Even though white, Asian, Latino and others apply on a regular basis to these fine "historically black" colleges.

So your telling me that only one non-black student applied to Johson C Smith? Academic reasons my ass.

I have a question. Is BET historically black too? If not, is it OK if I have TWN (The White Network), where we promote strength and unity within the white community for the white community?..Ohh that's right, we would be racists then.

So where do I apply to receive funds from the Black College Fund.....

Racism is a two way street. Two of the most racist folks I know are both black. They are more racist than anyone of any color I have ever met.

Back to the Blacks that have done so much for America.... there are many... but the powers that be tend to dote on a few. I am a big fan of the Tuskeegee Airmen.... amazing what they accomplished. You might remember the men that laid the road to Alaska too.
