Good 3:4 LCD with low refresh ?
« on: February 13, 2008, 02:41:17 PM »
[I posted this in a related topic, but apparently everybody was done with it, so I'll make a new thread]

Well... Supposedly ( :noid ) we're getting a hefty tax refund here in the USA, and it's got me wondering about a better monitor.

My current LCD is bright, and big, but blurs horribly (26ms response time, I believe).

I'm looking for a 3:4 ratio screen if possible (I don't like widescreen), with a decent refresh rate and some resolution larger than 1280x1024 (what I have now).

I believe the next standard up would be 1600x1280, can anybody confirm that?

It can be 17, 18, or 19 inches. I'm not against 20" but I don't want it to be too large. It has to sit on a desk next to my existing LCD. I don't want speakers on the monitor.

Anybody got any suggestions? I'm looking for something I can play AH on.

[Hopefully not too expensive. Seems the refunds will be smaller than I thought]

Don't like widescreen for several key reasons. Not the least of which is the playback of videos natively in 3:4 ratio, the playing of games (utmost importance!) and most don't look good at all in widescreen (most that I play, anyways), and in general widescreens are a gimick IMO.

Since the start of TVs, the start of CRTs, the start of LCDs, we've had a 3:4 ratio. The only reason to have widescreen is to find a 16:9 for proper movie playback, and I don't like watching movies on my PC (I'll watch them on the 36" TV set, thanks!)

That, in a nutshell, is why I'm looking for 3:4

If all I can find is a widescreen, well... I might settle, but I really don't want it.

This is the one I use  . I got mine on sale for $150 or so. Works great, no blurring, and very clear.

Well, that's got 1280x1024 max resolution. I've already got that resolution. I'd like to step up to the higher ranges to get better quality (more physical pixels) in-game.

Maybe I have to go CRT to get what I want? I hope not
