Anyone else build models?
« on: February 17, 2008, 12:48:51 AM »
Much to the chagrin of my squad, I've been MIA online a lot lately, due in part to my rekindled model building hobby. I hadn't built any models since I was about 18 (with the exception of a Sherman tank I built while in the Army). But on a recent trip to California to visit my parents, I went in my old closet & found my stash of unbuilt kits. I finished building an AH-1W Super Cobra for my ex-Marine brother in-law. My favorite plane of all time has been the P-61 Black Widow & I built one when I was about 12. When I started getting better at building kits, I wanted to do another one to make it come out better, so I bought two kits in hopes of building a diorama of some sort with both of them. I even bought a 1/48 scale Jeep to go with. That was right about the time I started driving & life went on a different course. I built a few kits afterwards, 2 P-47s (D-11 & D-25) & a P-38 all in 1/32nd scale which are hanging to this day in the rafters of my dad's shop, but for the most part quit building.

[Boring & long story to it's point] Brought the Widows home w/ Jeep in tow & started on them back in December. After 3 months of on & off work, here are the completed kits:
(Photoshopped because my digital camera wouldn't fit both in & still capture any detail)

The only thing I'm not happy about is the difficulty finding aftermarket decals for Widows now (I guess SuperScale went out of business, lucky for me eBay came to the rescue sort of) & I had to dummy up the A/C markings, so they aren't true to life representations of actual aircraft and are bastardized to an extent. Kind of had to make them this way to put them both in the same "squadron". I'd like to see other pics if anyone else builds (I saw a gorgeous Spitfire in another thread).

I'm a beginner model builder, I have a 1/48 mostly-completed F-22 Raptor, an unstarted 1/48 JAS-39 Gripen, a completed 1/72 Spitfire Mk Vb, another completed 1/72 Spitfire (I think Mk IX), and an almost done 1/72 P-47D Thunderbolt (maybe a D-25, can't tell too easily).
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?
Apparently I'm in the 20th FG 'Loco Busters', or so the legend goes.

AH2 is actually a break from modeling for me right now.

I stay within 1/35 Armour (+helos) and 1/32 Aircraft. I also Crash R/C Aircraft but, have a good time with 1/16th Scale R/C Armour

I got started in 1/35 about 30 years ago when I recieved a 1/35 Puma 8-Rad Italerai/Testors kit for my 8th Birthday.

While in the Navy I had to stop, plus later through most of my Twenties it was hit or miss.

It usually my "winter hobby" since in the Summer-Spring I play with my old British Motorcyles and Mustangs (cars not P-51!)

I'm now a Shermanaholic building every type etc of Shermans. It takes months now since all the Resin, Photo-etc, Research etc. Alot of that has to with the wealth of info I got from my Grandfather who was a Tanker with the 4Ad 37AR (Abrahams was his CO) before he transfered to out in early 44 to the USAAF for Pilot Training (and he did not complete due to an inner-ear imbalance issue that was found in the famous "Link" trainer!)

I went through my Axis Phase too but, I also do some Soviet and "Other) from time to time.

Small amount of Shermans in Case

Early M4 that was used at Kasserene

What Abrahams finsihed the war in, M4A3E8

More of Thunderbolt VIII. He started With Thunderbolt1 !!!! Think about it

Dragon-Wagon and Priest Combo 2 years work always photographs "odd"

M3 Modified with 37MM Used in North Africa

More of it

And my "room"

BTW, the line 1/32 A/C over my work bench are actually the 1/32 "X-terme" Detail Ultimate Soldier Toys!

They are fun to play with/admire without being paranoid for all the hours you put into building them.

I used to build them a lot when I was a kid but mostly just to watch them burn or explode around the Fourth of July. Only my favorites survived.

I use to build models a lot when I was a young kid. Then When I was around 20 I got back into a short bit.In my late 20s I built a couple more. The past 3 years though I have been realy keepin busy with model buildin. With work and all it takes me a lot longer to build them.I dont get many done per year but I am usualy messin with somethin on the work bench.I have a Ki-84 that I am working on at the moment.

Jeep...Good job on the P-61!:aok  looks very nice.

Rstel...The armor looks great!I have some 1/35 kits layin about I need to get busy on.I have a few shermans as well.An Easy-8 and a Jumbo. The Jumbo is a Tank Workshop resin kit.Always thought the Jumbo was a cool lookin sherman.I have mine up-gunned with the 76mm.

heres a Spit VIII I built for a buddy of mine

Spit 9

109g-2

I was just looking at Rstel's Hobby Store I noticed a lot of modelers have a stash of kits that would prolly keep them busy for years. With work slow and my overtime cut this is a perfect opportunity for me to build some "old stock":D Again Rstel I have to say you have some very nice lookin tanks there. When Im ready to "finish up" my Shermans I may have to look ya up for some tips.

Awesome Spitty's! and thanks for the comment on the Armour.

I cant build A/C to save my rear. I guess I learned to weather well (washes, flick shots of Steel, Rust and Artists Pastels) so I can always hide sins :)

As far as the unbuilts, you have no idea. Little most Modelers, that little shelf is only about 1/5th of what I have in "kits" stored away. I dont even build car models but, most of those car kits are for Mustangs I have the "full-size" of in my barn or gifts!

Shermans rule, there are about a million variants that you can do.

Thanks!!

I actually built two of them, if you look closely (bad pic I know) one has the flaps down & cowls closed, other flaps up & cowls open. I had to saw the front ends off the booms as Revell/Monogram figures you should build the plane with one engine cowl closed other open (lame in my book).

And that was the gorgeous spit I was referring to. I don't like spits in general, but that one makes me drool. Great job on the other A/C also.

I basically finished model building when I found airwarrior.  Not sure if that was a good thing.  The stock of unbuilt kits is kinda scary.

Just looking behind me on the shelves right now.  Mainly 1/48th scale

15 F4 Phantoms
7 F16s
12 Me109s, mostly E models
12P51s mostly B models
11 Spitfires
10 P38s mostly E,F, G, H
8 FW 190s of all makes
5 Hawker Typhoons

and it goes on and on not even starting on the armor kits still awaiting a build.

Probably should try and get back into it, but AH time is limited as it is. I'd have to quit :)
