Looking for Spitfire templates
« on: February 17, 2008, 03:27:44 PM »
Hi all,

Been doing some skinning in another sim lately and want to try my hand at AH.  Does anyone know where I can DL any templates to use as a starting point?

TIA!

Hi jocko, welcome to AH and to skinning:)

I recommend making your own template, you will get really acquainted with the plane and the skin.

Have fun!

There's a link in my sig for my version of "how to get started" -- it might help you. It includes making your own template, which is very simple, and creating panel lines. The actual artwork will be up to you, but it gives you the technical details

You'll find that most people here are pretty tight with their templates. The reason being is they take some time and work to make a good one. Most of the skins are great with answering any question on "HOW" to do anything with skinning, but so far I haven't heard of one "giving" there work away. Fester did once, and he was not happy with the crappy skins that were layed over his hard work, along with most didn't mention that it was Festers template that they built off of.

So I can understand the "why" of it, not that I agree with it, but I understand. To me anything I could do to help the "game" is what I do. getting credit for it is secondary. I'd love to try my hand at skinning, but I don't have the time to start from scratch, it would take years to get one done, and by then they will have changed the graphic engines again !   :lol

I actually use 3 different programs at the moment, Gimp, PS7, PSP7.  Strengths and weaknesses of all three make it impossible for me to just stick to one. ;)

Agree that skinners may have issues with lending templates, this is discussed pretty extensively in most skinning forums.  Personally I believe that full credit should always go to any source in the form of credits on the skin and/or in the README if so much as one rivet or paint chip is borrowed.

As for Spits, I'd probably start with the Mk I as there are so many possibilities for markings and colours.

PS7 can do everything that PSP7 can, and then some. If you have the one, the other is totally redundant.

Also, IMO, PS 6+ outstrips GIMP for functionality and practicality. GIMP can do most of what PS can (that's one of its best attributes) but the interface by all reviews leaves much to be desired.

If you have those 3 choices, PS7 is the best one. Just work in it.

You may ask some of the spit skinners. I give out my panel lines and rivets in thier basic form to people I know that want to try skinning. As rogerdee said some may help you out, but it is good idea to make your own since you are a skinner.

The only thing I still use PSP7 for is code letters and serials.  The text tool is more intuitive in PSP7 IMO.  Other than that, you're right, PS7 is the superior product.  I started skinning with GIMP and am slowly transitioning to PS7.  At the moment speed is the reason why I'm still using more than one program.  Until I've completely transitioned to PS7, if I know how to get the effect I'm looking for in another program I'll do it that way rather than use trial and error.

Skin viewer is a great program, wish they had it in IL2... just one question, how do I zoom in and out?

TIA

BTW I dont know if you have already, but its a good idea to take a look at the rules for skinning in AH. Also its good to post a pic of the one you're doing just in case someone else has started it.
