I normally only check scores to see if I'm in last place in squad, and if so it's time to tell the wife ack to leave me alone so I can get some time in.

Whether you care or not is your decision.  The funny part is that, if you care, some lame-o will call you names.   This game has the oddest mix of people.  The losers are the ones who can't accept you enjoy playing the game a certain way.

IF you don't do it their way, there is something wrong with you.   Imagine needing validation to that extent?  That you must play their way or they are reduced to calling names?   That's some major lack of self confidence.

Watch your score - let it gauge your improvements.

What do they think their gonna do with all them points and rank use it to get a better seat at the dinner table . Maybe trade em in on a new car??....... Fly for the fun points are POINTLESS

to you perhaps..

points/score/rank is just another element of the game.  some people like to know "where they stand"  others dont care..

people who do care about score dont seem too often to piss on those who dont..

but for those who dont care about rank sure get all pissy about those who do.

"im ranked 1900 and it means NOTHING, I PLAY FO FUN!"

k thanks bye

Ok, I just had a sortie tonight that perfectly makes my point.

I flew my butt off tonight.  I was having several good sorties in a row.  On this one in particular, I had flown to an enemy VH base, fought for a while with 2 squaddies.  The sortie and fights ebbed and flowed and eventually I got two kills with just enough gas to egress back home.

Either one of two things happened upon landing.  I either had gear damage that I didn't notice or I pranged my landing in.  Either way the bottom line was that I did a Guppy35/SAPP style landing.  So I'm sitting on the runway missing both wings, sorta laughing about it.  I called my squaddie over to do a low pass to see the mess I made of my plane, and while I'm sitting there on the runway about 20 seconds later I get, "You have been killed."

Why?  Why was I killed?  Did I have some sort of pilot wound without blood?  Did my plane explode by delayed reaction?  Did the game hiccup?

I have no idea, but the death bothered me.  Cause, see, I had a fairly nice score going- about 4.5 K/D, over 1.0 K/S, etc.  It was nice to have a score that reflected the hard work I was putting in to fighting smart.  Now I have that death staring me in the face, a total BS death, that's gonna be on there the rest of the tour.  It bugs me.

I can't help but be bothered by it.  I wish it wasn't there now.

Don't pay attention. It was some years when I was all score player, now I do not check them for a whole tour sometimes. Remember, whatever gives you fun and makes you involved is justified.

Also, if you are good in anything (flying, score, strat etc.) you will be hated by some people. It is perfectly normal, and their problem, not yours. -)

It is quite easy to game scores and be in top 100 every tour even for very average player. And trust me, all player in top 10 game scores. By gaming I mean making something which is not needed, nor interesting, but will feed your scores, like using torpedo boat rockets against objects.

Wing up with me for a couple hours, and your score should be ruined for the month, then go have fun!

I don't think it's a bad think to try to have a good score. My problem comes with those who associate score with skill. Perfect example is leviathn. His score is in the 1100 range on average but not many can beat him.

Some who have good scores are also very skilled, but score is not the end all be all of how good someone is.

That is true

I concider myself an average pilot but once every tour i do the torpedoboat thing  but thats the only thing i really do besides trying not to getmyself blow out of the sky and up from vulched fields :D.

When i play im always in the top 10 somewere so it aint that hard.

I couldn't agree more and sorry for this slight diversion from the main thread.

Putting aside gaming the score.  I think the ethos of the score system is tuned to that idea.

OK I have the erg to explain the obvious because some folks don't get "obvious".

If you do negative things in game your score or potential score gets hurt.  Your a quak furballer type so your fighter rank is meaningless and it reflects that.  Your a bomb bail pork auger geezer so your bomber / attack score reflects that.  Your a prayer of a sprayer your hit % reflects that.  Your a GV bomber in Lancaster's your damage / hit % reflects that.  Your the mole of "whack a mole" so your GV score reflects that....  That's it in brief but could be expanded upon.

Sure!... All the above are having their idea of "FUN".  Some will even argue the point that suicide bombing / bombing and bailing is helping their side to win.  Which to these individuals is more important than their score.  Others will argue that bombing and bailing etc is totally gamey and skilless.  Not in keeping with the game.

Or another way to explain to the terminally dumb.  If the designers condoned suicide bombing, pork & auger, fly to you die and all the other crap the skilless could devise, then the designers of the game would make a positive point of it in the score system.  To date they do not.  As an aside to this very fact could you imagine what would happen "Prime time USA" if fighter kills in bombers actually counted:rolleyes:

p.s  over all rank is not a sign of great skill it's a sign of the Jack of all trades but master of none.  Good only for CV command.  Individual score can show your growth or the ability of the opponent....gaming score aside of cause.   It's a tool you can use to improve your ability as an individual if used correctly.
