Absinthe Now Legal in U.S
« on: February 20, 2008, 10:16:34 PM »
I just found out that Absinthe(pronounced Ab-synth)  was finally made legal for sale in the U.S in 2007, has anyone here ever tried it?  If so how is it and is there anything you can compare it's taste to?

Absinthe is nothing more than a licorice liqueur.  Some have a more herbal flavor, and aroma.

If you like black licorice, than you will like absinthe...

It's not the same Absinthe from the good old days that was chock full of hallucinogens.  It's pretty much just a licorice/herbal liquor ...

Thats why it was legalised- its just more overpriced booze now.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Thanks, I guess I'll stay clear of it then, I hate licorice liqueur, like Sambuca.

If you want to try a good Absinthe get a good imported one.
I recommend Logan Fils http://www.absinth.com/links/loganfils.html
It's difficult finding ones with respectable thujone content and usually the ones available off the shelf are produced to exclude thujone. It is not however illegal to import the genuine product for personal use.
Thujone is the active ingredient of traditional absinthe derived from the herb wormwood.

So for personal use Absinthe with thujone is legal here in the U.S?  Because I thought that all Absinthe in the U.S had to be thujone-free?

Also I've seen theres a special way your supposed to prepare the Absinthe before you drink it by:

   1. Fill the reservoir of the glass with absinthe (or about 1/3 to 1/5 absinthe of the volume).
   2. Place an absinthe spoon and a sugar cube on top of the glass.
   3. Slowly drip ice water through the sugar until it dissolves completely.
   4. The drink louches (turns white) and new flavours come out.

Now have you ever prepared it that way, and if so how does it effect it's taste?

I think all commercially sold Absinthe has to be Thujone free.  The government can't, and shouldn't be able to stop an individual from purchasing real Absinthe from Europe.

Your right that they shouldn't be able to stop you from purchasing it in Europe, but I'm sure they can stop you from having it imported to the U.S.

The flavour is not as intense and is IMO more palatable.
The cold water dissolves the sugar which takes some of the edge off the intense herbal flavour of the liqueur.
This is not something you will want to sit and drink a whole bottle of in one sitting.

So have you had Absinthe that doesn't have Thujone in it?  And if so, do you notice it's absence?  Because all Absinthe thats sold here in the U.S has to be Thujone-free.

Yes I have had both kinds.
The difference is noticeable.
It is an acquired taste. ;)
