Sadly, when the game becomes personal.....
« on: April 01, 2001, 04:35:00 PM »
This is sad to report, and I've heard from a few other people that this sort of thing happens all to often.

I've flown will all the sides in the year I've been flying Aces High.  I've flown with some great Bishop, Rook and Knight players.  Its always nice to get some "Hey Welcome back!" messages whenever you opt to fly with some old friends again.

Over the past few months, I've flown Knights and joined a Squad that is soley Knights (332nd).  Great bunch of guys.  No complaints there.

A few weeks ago, my old boss emailed me, suprised to see my posts on the BBS and suggested we fly together sometime.  Sure!  Sounds great...he is flying Bish and some of the guys he told me about sound really fun to fly with.  So I forewarned my Squaddies that, for a night, I was going to fly with my friend (Hening).  Everyone was tongue-in-check about it, saying they'd love to give me the chute time and look forward to my return.

Sounds great, right?

Well, you old farts know better.

I'd like to introduce you into the 2 most vile players I have ever had to fly with, much less squelch.  Sac1 and Kak3 have made this such a personal attack that its truly pathetic.  Good God, you think I'd sold their parents into slavery or something.  At any rate, the banter over the chat buffer has been pretty nasty and its resulted in less play time for me lately.  These two morons accuse me of changing sides solely for perk points (I wasnt even one when the resets happened) and in their eyes, Im just a traitor to them.  Guys, you two need to get a life and realize that the people playing online are fellow paying customers.  Just because we do not march to your orders does not mean we are expected to and deserve your little tizzie fits online.

I can truly understand why some people squelch channel 2 now.  Luckily, I do think there are more good people out there than jerks, but sadly the amazinhunks are the loudest of the population it seems.

You don't have to squelch everyone, just the boneheads.    ".squelch handle" works well.

Personal is what you get with an online Sim. Otherwise you might as well stick to offline.

Thats the good and bad of it, luckily HT has given us tools to squelch these people, just use them and leave it at that.

I've seen sac1 & kak3 around, and let me tell you some of us out there are a lot worse!

I have squelched both of these individuals.  Its too bad to have to do that, but that's the nature of the online entertainment and no real moderation going on.

Just as I was signing out, 2 guys were arguing about who crossed whose line for fire for a kill.  <sigh>  Its all pretty silly...I guess when I go to the Con, Ill bring my Nerf toys and be preapred to defend myself

And not only mean-spirited and rude; it seems like your pals Kak and Sac are pretty immature too. Kak is an Afrikaans word that translates as "Scheisst" (Or is it "Scheiss?" Close enough, I imagine). As for Sac... well, need I say more?

Yeah, yeah, maybe I'm reading too much into it. But still... erk.

The fact that people are taking this so personal is a fact of virtual life in these games. A lot of real-life emotions and viscera come to the fore - even more so in a prolonged mission-based scenario. People get along amazingly well at Con's, though - its just in the game itself that their Dark Sides come out. The worst I've ever seen happen is that some people just avoid each other.

Look at it this way: it's their own insecurity that's making them act that way. If they weren't so worried about their own ability to "win," why would they care where you flew? (... wow ... how totally, like, Zen, dude ...)

Agreed Lepaul, poeple like that need to get a life & remember that there's something out there not related to knits, bish or crooks...

(Hey, I had a wonderfull time during the 2 weeks I spent with the Bishes, having been Knit for about 14 months before that I never had a chance to fly with some fine poeple out there, friendship in here for me, has no "country line".)

fortunately, those who are usualy yelling I do not care about. And the others are usualy just taking the p*ss (like that Kid Mathman)

Sorry Straffo, I had just blown a wing off Spooky67 (got assist) and then blew your wing off (I was flying Yak 9T).  Seemed rather strange indeed!  Hope to see you back Bish someday!

I'm not at all surprised people get along amazingly well at the con, the possibility of immediate and painful retributuion for one's verbal assault of another gives pause to those who consistently display this demeanor online.
