Our Tankers are getting a new toy (maybe)...
« on: February 27, 2008, 05:46:53 PM »
We always wondered why we didn't have one of these in the arsenal back when I was on the Abrams, apparently someone decided we didn't need them anymore (though I think they still had them for the 105mm on the Patton). Apparently current events and feedback from 19Kilos in the field has led to a bit a reevaluation.

We always wondered whos bright idea it was to take that out of the lineup, especially since about 1/3 of the historical battles and scenarios in our training manuals from WWII, Korea and Vietnam involved the use of canister fire to keep infantry off tanks. MGs are nice, but when you're buttoned up and trying to look through slits to aim and fire, its kind of difficult. Not to mention its not really effective when you're being swarmed.

Canister opens up a nice hole in the determined attackers, and can put a real "RUN AWAY" incentive to the less determined ones.

The old M48's and M60's had 4 types of main gun rounds. One of them was called Beehive. It was a flechette round and absolutely devastating. I never understood why they dropped it from the inventory.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

they dropped flechettes for the same reason they dropped Napalm. In humane weapon of war... cause that makes sense

They didn't do away with napalm. The Marines (MAG-11 specifically) used it in Iraq in '03.

And how exactly does "humane" mean a damn in a world with suicide bombers, IEDs, and beheadings on YouTube?

I wonder how hard it is to change out the chokes?
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Cannister round would be more appropriate, Tac. Grapeshot was generally not contained within a containter.

I don't see how that round would be effective in Afghanistan etc. Watching a recent documentary following British troops on combat operations, the Taleban seemed to keep their heads down and melt away into buildings and down tunnels. They needed to be pushed out by close quarter fighting by the British troops.
