One of the biggest tradigies was the scrapping of the Enterprise after the war.
She was slated to be saved as the first "Memorial" but it just never worked out. Halsey himself was at the head of the drive to save her.
Parts of her do still exist. She was broken up in Kearney NJ and the engineer (I dont recall his name) who executed her demise knew the signifcance of what he was doing, photographing the entire operation.
Her fan plate with the words E N T E R P R I S E was carefully cut off and is in the outfield of the little league field in River Vale NJ (Where the ship-breaker engineer was from).
Some of Her Portholes were installed on the Nuke Enterprise CVN-65. Her bell is at Anapolis and is wrung when Navy scores a TD. The football stadium at Anapolis has "Enterpise Tower" which was supposed to have her distinctive mast attached to it but, it was never installed.
Teak from her deck was also salved and given to members of the Enterprise association by the ship breaker (again I cant recall his name right now)
There is a really excellent book called Enterpise/Big-E CV6 that chronicles her history. I have it but, am on the road and dont have the authors name or ISBN since its home.
