Hi Kilz, yep, that should work m8. USB2.0 is ever so slighter faster than firewire (not by much tho). You'd need to have backup software (making the assumption you do) and would need to point the backup software to that drive. Should be easy enough to do fella.

Assuming you use Windows Xp, you can setup an automated backup to execute at a time you choose daily and backup to the hard drive.  Just goto start, run, type in ntbackup, press enter.  Or you can find it in start, programs, accessories, system tools, backup.

There's a wizard that'll walk you through selecting the files you need to backup.

There's other commercial apps that do this with a little more finesse, but Windows backup should work just fine.

For a full hard drive image, there's lots of freeware out there that'll do it for you.

Acronis is well worth the minimal bucks for anything really important IMO. Not bombproof as sims post highlights but once you have the disk image its golden, even if you have a hoop or two to jump thru at times.

Nope, just because the throughput numbers of 480 Mbps (USB) looks bigger than 400 Mbps (Firewire), Firewire drives are still faster.  Firewire's design is developed more for speed and the easiest way I can put it without wikipedia'ing it is that Firewire is more efficient and has less overhead than USB 2.0.

Depending on the file sizes, firwire is 10-30% faster than USB 2.0

I actually just received my external HD today.  Its a Maxtor 80GB HD that I got for free because of having Vista on my new laptop.  While I havent had any problems with Vista, this is a plus.  Also with this HD I also received a free Dlink Wireless gaming router which is sitting in my room with no use because I have a linksys wireless router being used.  What Ill do with the Dlink router I have no idea yet but hey its free.

This is a site that is doing the offers which I guess is being sponsored by Microsoft.  http://localpcbuilder.com/offers/
