Earlier today I was flying a p47 and I took 5 50.cal bullets and my wing fell off. This is extremely unrealistic. If you have heard of Robert S. Johnson's first story of having over 200 30.cal bullets in his plane and still made it home then why does 5  50.cal bullets shoot down my plane

I don't think it is how many bullets, but where the bullets hit.

                        Realistic? There were probably Jug drivers who died due to "1" bullet. The lucky bb was a real factor in Ariel combat and is in AH too. Last night I did a jug run against ords/dars on TT Island using rockets. I got into 3 or 4 dustups after, this after getting hit by ground flak, and the jug got me home while looking like cheese of the Swiss variety.

                       Everything depends on where you get hit. My one beef with Jugs is the "N" always gets hit in the gas tank. It happened to me so often I quit flying Ns.

all it takes is ONE 50 call to the head, and your in the tower. "where" is far more important than "how many"

Like Fugitive said.  If you get those '5' shots on your wing and it was all in one area you would lose a wing... But, just because you saw '5', does not mean there was 'only 5'.  That might of been all you saw as far as hit sprites, so I am sure there were some more.

                      I had a friend who flew Jugs in the ETO. He used to tell me the airplane was legendary for getting its pilots home. The thing was like a vampire and the germans used to have to drive a stake thru its heart to kill it. Except for the gas thing in the "N" I find the AH Jug to be very realisticaly modeled. I have a new love affair going with the D-40. I like flying it clean with only the 10 rockets and the light ammo load. I have found it to be, probably, the toughest fighter in the game. Its my airplane of choice for taking out ords and protecting our CVs.

1. You have no way of how many rounds struck you. Five audible pings do not mean just five bullets. Therefore, your assumption that your plane was hit by only five bullets, is more than likely false.

2. Ever wonder why people consider Mr. Johnson extremely lucky on that day encounter? The P-47 is a structurally robust, reliable plane, but it's neither a tank nor armoured like one.

I have emptied nearly all my magazines in my 109G2 into a jug before without it going down (I recall one time having only 20-30 rounds of 20mm left before bringing it down.... it was at long range, so there were a lot of misses and the rounds were spread out, but I got quite a few hits on the Jug).
Ive also had Jugs survive single 30mm hits. Ive never had any other plane survive that besides bombers.
