Hey, Widewing!!
« on: March 07, 2008, 09:08:20 AM »
First off- I have a copy of Thunderbolt from Seversky to Victory- good stuff!  :aok  Didn't realize I had one of your books in my collection.

Secondly- when would you be able to help me wring out the Jug?  I do okay in the D-11, but I wanna do better, turn tighter, and kill more.  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights are my best nights, but I will try to work with ya as much as possible.

Thanks for your time.

It's not my book. It's Warren's book. I did some writing with Warren in the late 90s, through 2002. I just swiped his company's name for my cpid back in 2001 when I started here. Warren and I had a parting of the ways in 2002, so to speak. I was too busy to allocate the time he wanted. He needed a retired old fart like himself as a partner..  ;)

I fly the P-47 and use it in the TA quite a bit. I'll see if I can get into the TA one night over the weekend and we can wring out the Jugs for a while.

Awesome!  Thanks in advance, sir.

So you didn't do any work on the book I mentioned?  I knew you were a researcher for the guy, thought you'd be involved in that book.

In any case, would you call the book a good source of information, or is Bodie rather opinionated and subject to skewing facts to match his vision?

Warren's P-47 book was published well before I met him. Jeff Ethell did the editing.

Bodie is a man of strong opinions. He has tremendous resources and knows or knew just about everyone of consequence in American Aviation over the past 60 years. Occasionally he misses some facts, but generally is on target. He's not an historian, and lacks the training to be a top-notch researcher. However, he is a good writer and has a massive collection of original photos and documents. He's also a good interviewer, which is important when writing about people as well as machines. He can be remarkably stubborn and as he aged, his shut-up gene seemed to cease working.  ;) All of that said, he had proven to be one of the more important American aviation writers since the 1970s and is held in very high regard by his contemporaries.
