Speaking of P-38's

Anyone else read this book on the 6 P-38's and 2 B-17's that were forced to land in Greenland do to bad weather. 
 


interesting enough that this guy Pat Epps thought they could locate these planes, brush the snow off fix them up and fly them out of there.
but they ended up finding them at a depth of 250 feet in solid ice.

Nope, the first P-38 that landed flipped over.

I i was referring to the SAPP deal. 

but your right it was Brad McManus that landed first and when the nose gear hit the ice it broke through and flipped the plane over.

well if your cockpit is in the snow with 3 tons of machine holding it down you would half to dig a rabbit hole out of there, 

even the kickin power of donkey wouldnt get his "ass" out

I was kidding donkey,  book sais he got out through a side window in the cockpit,  he had to wiggle alot to get out tho.

spike its not a funny book but a history book on these planes and alot of good pics and how they got one or more of the planes out of there since then.

interesting to read about it,  here is one that belly landed, the 2 black spots behind it are the props and hubs.

id say low on gas and having to ditch like that my  heart would be in my lap beating away lol

seeing th first plane  land and flip on its top you know its soft ground there and then to belly land and slide to  a stop.

question,   what was the names of the 2 B17's that was with the 38's?

I don't know whether this is true or not, but I heard from my Dad (he loves P-38s) that these pilots used their parachutes to slide around whilst they were waiting to be rescued.  If so, sounds like fun
