Read the write up in National Geographic back in 1995 or so.   Might have to pick up this book.

Let's just get it straight the P-38 was the best fighter plane ever built... It could out bomb a B-17, outurn a Zero, outrun a 262, out climb a Me-163, and an entire squadron F-16's would be hard pressed to shoot it down.

It was nicknamed "Der Gabelshwanz teufel" because the Germans were just so whimpering scared of it. It defeated the entire Luftwaffe by itself and and the other planes were just there for moral support.

All 38 pilots were the best ever, and it is without a doubt the sexiest plane ever built...

There i think we've FINALY cleared that up .....

I don't know whether this is true or not, but I heard from my Dad (he loves P-38s) that these pilots used their parachutes to slide around whilst they were waiting to be rescued.  If so, sounds like fun  :)

i read through the link there and i find it odd that they wonderd if glacier-girl was this 38 in the photo

it cant be as both props are broke off and laying in the snow behind the plane.  the one they recoverd clearly shows both props still on it.
