II./JG 3 Bf 109 K4
« on: March 09, 2008, 08:21:02 AM »
Sorry for making a second thread on this subject, I've flooded the other one with too many pictures.

I will only post images when I am 95% finished from now on.

Anyway, as far as I can see I have completed this one. I took some time off in the country for a well earned vacation and I lost my way a bit with this one. Any 'eagle eyes' on this would be hugely appreciated... Any mistakes you notice or suggestions you have.... have at it, please.

Many thanks, lads.

The underside looks almost white. The grey looks almost as light as the white.

The colors don't seem right somehow. I don't know (*shrug*)

P.S. Why is the SC intake green if the paint around it is grey? Is this an oversight or is it historical?

The canopy structure supposed to be darker than the rest like that?

And you are still a pixel or so off on the starbord side near the nose cone.

Cheers

Two other points:

1) If it's a field-painted camo job, they wouldn't have painted the stencils back on top (so no wing walk area, no text).

2) if it did have text on the wing, you've got it mirrored on the screenshots. You would have to flip/mirror it in the bitmap so that in-game it showed up properly. That is, of course, ignoring poitn #1 (above)

The SC colour was historical, as per two photos I have of the aircraft.

As for the colours... the RLM 76 looks like a good representation of every example I have, internet and model-paint wise. Perhaps it's a monitor issue?

I can't be sure if it was a field job or not, so I don't know about the stencils. Thanks for pointing out the text mirroring

Upon closer inspection of my photos I'm beginning to think that the canopy rails were infact dark green, not grey.

I'll change that and fix that fuselage gap too.

Thanks guys.

Upon starting work on my second K4 I decided the first set of colours I used was too light.

Hence, I've re-done the paint work in a darker shade of the colours. I created a custom mix for the colours RLM 75 and 83 and used Simmer's RLM 76 for the underside.

Any comments? I'm ready to submit this skin if not.

More weathering Arch :)  You've got everything else more or less done.
And possibly more panel relief.

Dammit, I just realised I forgot to adjust the 3D sections on the cowl. They're still the original colour. I'll have to burn them a bit more.

What would you suggest, Moot? The underside is absolutely filthy, as per the photograph.

I may add some more oil leaks.

I'll increase the opacity on the panel line dirt a little too.

Aside from beating the watermelon out of the paint, which I don't really want to do, I can't really think of much else.

I don't know 109s at all.  They didn't have any variation in panel flex?  What about clean weathering, like rain or wind wear? Like on Waffle's 301 Ta152 skin, before the remodel.

Even the most subtle variations can make a big difference.  Subtle variations in panel line opacity probably would work..

It's looking good.  The paint chips seen from the cockpit should be a bit more irregular I think.  Seen from the distance in the second picture, the paint is still very homogeneous :)  I dunno exactly how you'd improve that, I'm soon gonna come up to that problem myself, on the 152 skin I'm doing.
