Yes they did carry the M-1, just look at the first photo of the Paratrooper with the M-1 on his back. Watch the "Band Of Brothers" "Longest Day" or another WWII movie with Paratrooper's in it and your'll see M-1's along with Thoomsons, folding stock M-1 carbines and M-3 grease guns.
Being a Tanker starting back in 1983, we still had the M-3 Grease Gun for our weapon in our tanks up until the mid- 80's. Love the weapon, very simple to tear down and put back together after cleaning. If I remember right only about 5 to 6 parts.
But would be nice to have the troopers carry at lest a rifle
