Rearview mirror
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:01:17 PM »
I seem to recall several WW2 aircraft had mirrors installed in or above the cockpit to aid a pilot's rearward visibility, However, I've not seen this modeled into the game. Is this something that was left out due to performance issues, or just an oversight in the game?

apparently, yes there is a issue with performance of sorts.. something to the effect of if they added mirrors they would have to render everything twice..

Heh...you might see something in your mirror, and it might be a pony, and it might be red, but as for the rest...

I've flown alot of other sims with rearview mirrors and they help. They don't make up for a good scan pattern but. When your looking at something up front those little flickers you see in your mirror help a tremendous amount with warning you.

this game would have to be way bigger than 150 megs in size to have something like that.

HTC simply doesn't want to reduce your frame rate to fractions of a single digit.  This is an old idea, well hashed, and pretty well explained.  Rear view mirrors would generate an unacceptable performance hit on the engine.  On of AHs founding principles is letting people play with low-end equipment. This principle has precedence over mirrors.

Gunther Rall  on rear view mirrors:

'The vibration of the plane made them almost useless-if the enemy got close enough to see them in your mirror, it was already to late'

Or something like that. I don't remember his exact words, as it was an interview and I dont have the transcript.

Understandable puck.

Someone please tell to me how systems in games for the past 9+ years runing on 486's in dos have no problem with it.
Anyhow, im just butting heads with the idea that it would have a major impact on our frames per second, and like most things would probably have options for them.

Even the older games has the ability to show max distance, detail at distance, skin resolutions so on and so forth.
But yeah..lets just say we dont need them, partly because older games have mirrors to help with the lack* of good head views.

Mirrors are a moot point for aces high, if any of you have used Irtracking, you know what i speak of.
I can flick my head in a direction and get tons more info in a single milisecond than some mirrors would give me.

And hitech that "i dont think he knows how" was just a stick in the side, nothing more.  :salute

:Edit: VERY true motherland very very true, perhaps with the smother jet engines, and poorer rear views, is why we see so many jets from the 50's to the 80's using them.
I wounder if modern day jets still use them at all. (i'm sure)

Iv seen a few posts where you say stuff about other games have this and that. This isnt any other game, its aces high. I have found no other games with the number we have in one arena, and thats one of the main reasons we cant have some stuff.  HT has already said why so just let it go.

Whatever you think larry.
If my 486 could compute some 30+ nascars behind me, i see no reason it couldnt handle a few fighters behind it.

But hey, no use beating a dead horse.
