Widescreen monitor
« on: March 13, 2008, 11:41:18 AM »
I did a search and got the answers I was looking for (i.e. that the top and bottom of the game are cropped in widescreen resolutions) but was wondering if you can still letter-box the game (4:3 with black-outs on the sides) on a widescreen monitor.  There was a post where others were doing that but it's from 1996 so I want to be sure you still can if the cropping seems to be too much.

You should be able to, but it might depend on how the monitor is configured when it senses a 4:3 aspect ratio request.  Monitors can stretch to fill the width, or use the black bars to fill in the sides.  It is normally a monitor configuration option on how to handle it all.

On an nvidia card with Detonator drivers, it's under "scaling" or "monitor scaling" -- basically you want to set it to NO scaling

Then you find the right resolution to play AH under, so that it takes up most of the vertical space.

For example: Say your screen is 1600x1024, the next best 3:4 ratio is 1280x1024. Say your screen is 1280x800, the next best would probably be 1024x768 (leaving a little black space above and below as well, but not as much as on the sides).

It will center the pixels on the monitor, whatever resolution you choose. I've done this with older games that run in lower resolutions, out of curiousity.

OK, thanks.  Oh, and that other post was from 2006, not 1996 :)
