What is a Hippie?

In my mind, a hippie is a person who is basically a  bum.

i for one, am a hippie, i am NOT a bum, i am NOT a highschool dropout, i believe in peaceful protest, i listen to the greatful dead, i don't believe in any one religion but consider them all to be different manifestations of the same idea, i DONT smoke weed or do LSD but i do have many friends that are also hippies and do smoke a WHOLE lot, and i DO take showers.

Well, Gowan just said he is a hippie, so I now want to know why he considers himself to be one.

Just curious. I have nothing against hippies but I do confess that my bias seems to lean towards them being bums.

Maybe people who consider themselves to be "hippies" are just trying to make themselves feel good about themselves in some way, which is okay by me.

I just want to know what a hippie is. Gowan is a hippie, so I want to know what makes him consider himself a hippie.

Gowan says he's a hippie, but he doesn't do drugs. In your link, drugs almost define a hippie.
