Reminiscing about late 1940s Harlem in his 1964 autobiography, Malcolm X referred to the word "hippy" as a term that African Americans used to describe a specific type of white man who "acted more Negro than Negroes."

Is that anything like this?

Gosh, the only hippie that responded will not even define what a hippie is.

Maybe hippies can be better described by what they're not. I reckon they're people that aren't as uptight as most. They certainly wouldn't think of starting a thread to define "hippies" then get all bent if it doesn't give them the response they wanted from the responders they wanted to hear it from or the "accurate definition" they desired within 24 hours or sumpin'. :D

No, the hippie in question has professed to have ADHD.  I bet he's already forgotten this thread and what the question is.

In clothing chioce, Hippies tend to wear the uniform of the non-conformist.

That is to say, they conform to the non-conformist fashion.  Right?

_____________________________ ____________

Hippies were invented back in the 60's, so most of the authentic ones are rather old now:

A lot of children of Baby Boomers have adopted the lifestyle too, but are often not as real as the originals:

They are most commonly spotted in very liberal cities, especially University towns like Berkeley and Santa Cruz in California, and Eugene in Oregon.

I believe that they may also be more common here on the West Coast, than they are back east.

There are hippies....and then...there are HIPPIES.  It is hardly a homogenous group.

There is the garden-variety hippy, who advocates peace, wears tie-dye and beads and raggedy jeans and headbands, and smokes weed ("Hey man!  Pass that over!")

Then, there is the "I'm from BERKELEY", raving socialist anti-capitalist anti-American anti-military, narcissistic, self-righteous, arrogant west-coast hippy.  You know the type.  The kind that even normally peace-going, pacifistic Americans want to beat the hell out of.

Lastly, there is the ultra-radical, frightening, violent, murderous, Manson style hippy.  Thankfully, they seem to be rarer than hen's teeth.

I was there...  I was around em every day.. I lived in their communes from time to time and sold em drugs.

Hippies were most definitely not libertarians.. they were socialists.   pretty much non violent socialists but socialists just the same.   They were not clean when left to themselves..  weekend hippies were clean.. weekend hippie women were worth bedding..

At the same time as hippies you had weekend hippies and you had bikers but.. most could tell the difference.  Some real hippies showed a certain amount of courage at times.  they were wrong but.. in a few.. the courage was admirable.   most were lazy and cowardly and dirty and druggies.

They had a hard time picking their friends and their enemies...  they admired the biker types as outlaw hero's or some such.. never did get that clear..  They f3eared guns and they embraced socialism and soooo..  a lot of their wrong headed ideas have survived to today.

Imagine the conundrum of the hippie..  what do you do with someone who doesn't work on the commune?   mostly they made life hell for the guy or girl till he left..

What do you do with the drunken biker you brought and wouldn't leave who was eating all your food and.. against all the rules... shooting guns and making Harley noises and generally being.. a biker?   you can't throw him out cause he will get violent and you have no plan for that.

So now.. they control government police.. they don't mind if the government they used to hate beating or imprisoning or even killing someone who doesn't tow the socialist line (for his own good)

As an example I would point you to the flower children..  bill and hillary.

Hippies were people who played at being communists. Most found that communism simply doesn't work and joined mainstream society. Hippies today are idealists without any workable ideals.
