Ignore a thread option?
« on: March 15, 2008, 02:40:46 PM »
Would that be nice, or what?

I'd use it on  *certain threads* that keep resurrecting themselves with terminal lameness.  ;)

Just right click the thread, then select "ignore" and it goes away forever.  :aok

Please try to stay on topic.  :aok

Didn't mean to single out just that thread. I think it could be a good feature.

One reason I'd like the ability to block individuals, and yea even whole threads, is that certain people in here post with deliberatly inflammatory intent.  That's ok sometimes, but the problem is that occasionally I actually respond to these people because what they post bugs me that badly.  They participate in discussions that are otherwise intelligent, but their inputs are intentionally irritating or distracting and they either shut down the discussion or divert it into flames against themselves.  They do it on purpose, but they are usually careful to not break forum rules.  Plus I wouldn't necessarily want them banned 'cause, you know, pot, kettle, etc.  But it would dramatically increase the signal/noise ratio if I could block a handful of people.  It would help me stay on topic as well.

It would lower my blood pressure and reduce the number of times I "contribute" to flamewars if I could simply block their posts.  Or threads, now that nuke brings it up.  It has nothing to do with "punishing" people, or trying to show them up.  Of course, listing the blocked names might make it seem that way, but even that is a form of feedback saying "these people express themselves in a way that I find to be unusually irritating or offensive".  I'm not sure why that is considered childish, and how it's somehow better to either keep quiet or continue to propagate flamefests by expressing the exact same sentiment in off-topic post responses.

The above "discussion" between 88 and nuke is a perfect example...  Might that have been prevented if one was ignoring the other?

I honestly was just thinking about the idea, because it would put less clutter on the screen.

Some threads I just don't want to see and I don't have any interest in them. I think it would be cool to be able to block it.

I thought this was where lazs comes in and says he'd never do that because it's not manly, someone else drops a link to the nissan GT-R, someone else (you know who) comes in and says it's proof of GW, someone else says "you voted for GW Bush?  you retard!", diablo posts a pic of his girl humping his camaro, some other fine young adult makes a fool of himself with a single line of lolspeak, skuzzy comes in and says "not here, not now", and everyone in the forum tries to get one more "in" posted between the time skuzzy makes his post and actually gets it locked.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Actually, I agree.  It would make browsing the forum for new and interesting threads/responses a lot more efficient.  I don't know how many times I don't recognize a "new" thread and open it, only to find that it's a thread I dismissed as uninteresting a couple of days ago.

Probably be easier if the system automatically blocked all threads and posters unless you checked the few that aren't terminally lame.

I seldom used the old board ignore function but found that when I did, it made coming to the board far more enjoyable. I have to say it would be a good addition here again.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

only used the ignore function once or twice...never lasted more than a day or two. was easier to simply keep scrolling past certain peoples posts, and i didnt miss the occasional good bit from them.

eagl...you forgot someone denouncing the idea as evil, because it is mildly communist.
