Determining location of picture
« on: March 16, 2008, 11:55:04 PM »
Back in November, I flew down the coast to LA, then back via Vegas/Death Valley/Hawthorne, NV/Klamath Falls.  Between Death Valley and Hawthorne, I took a picture of a crater.  I'm trying to figure out where it is, and have a candidate I'd like a second opinion on.

Here's the trip, hand drawn on a map.  This was from memory a couple months afterwards, so it's not exact:

The picture:
http://picasaweb.google.com/ben.hallert/LongCaliforniaNevadaTrip/photo#5130692888112721938
(the location tag I put into Google Maps there is a guestimate, disregard)

The candidate location is:
http://wikimapia.org/#lat=37.006391&lon=-117.454147&z=14&l=0&m=a

I think it looks similar.  The picture was taken out my left window so the plane was east of the crater.  I think it was within a half hour of leaving Furnace Creek airport.

Thoughts?

Try downloading Google Earth...you can turn the map, zoom, flip it so it's 3D.

I'm looking at the crater using GE now, it's the big crater, your picture from the plane is facing southwest.

Whoa!  That looks like a match alright, thanks!  I was in GE earlier yesterday evening for a different project, for some reason I just never re-opened it for this one.  (forehead slap)

WOW they got some big gophers out there. :D Nice pic. I've got one somewhere of Wake Island that i took when we were being deployed overseas. We were landing in a C130 and i took it out one of the side windows and man is it pretty! Can see the whole island and the reefs plus the runway is clearly seen. All in awesome color!

Is that the shadow of a Rook bomber I see next to the crater, creeping along at 40K with a load of 1,000lb bombs for divebombing an innocent factory/town with?   :lol

Yep, was just trying to figure out WHICH crater in Death Valley.  I remember looking at it and thinking "Hmm, how far are we from the Nevada Test Range again?" while I snapped the pic.  ;)
