Vista and Microphone (HELP!)
« on: March 19, 2008, 04:38:30 PM »
Vista strikes again! I hate Microsoft  :devil.. :furious. Has anyone successfully installed a mirophone on a Vista machine that works in AH?  :rofl

If so, please tell how.  :aok

The AH folks say they do not have any help pages for this.  :cry

Hmmm not sure what you mean by install a microphone.  My laptop has vista and it has a microphone port where I just plug the microphone in and it works.

I have no problems running it.

(Not sure if this is what you're looking for)

To set up a microphone in Vista right click the volume Mixer (little speaker on the task bar).  Click Recording Devices.  Click the microphone image. Click Configure. Click Set Up Microphone and follow the instructions. To test follow these instructions. http://www.hitechcreations.com/ahhelp/voice.html

I didn't have to make any adjustments either, just plug and play.  Sometimes the kids will turn the switch off on the cord, did you check that?

Under "Advanced" Properties on the "sound" tab there is a check box labeled "boost Mic". Check it, it helped me alot.

It seems that the microphone is working as a default through "What you hear" functionality in Vista so it appears that in OS the mic works but not in AH.

You need to change this from control panel, audio settings and recording settings and set "Microphone" as default instead of "What you hear" option and the mic starts working in AH. You also need to set up the mic as per instructions before you can use it.

Also notice that after an audio driver update installation the default may be again switched to "What you hear" so you need to change it manually back to "microphone".

If you have a addon soundcard make sure that the mobo onboard sound is disabled. Not Vistas fault. Conflict wont occur until you try using a mic.

Never could get VOX to work on our test Vista box.  Probably driver related.  In debug, all the operating system functions return good status, there is just nothing to capture.

I know it works with some sound card/devices, but I have yet to hear anything consistent so we could make a list.

There could be some flag or control somewhere, but in all the support calls I have had about this, nothing logical has been found as to why some boxes work and others do not.

I'll accept any help on this as I have tried everything I think of to get our own test Vista box to work.  It has a Realtek HD audio chip (not sure of the exact model number.  I'll see if I can get that Tuesday).

Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.  Right click on the regular speakers and click disable.  Then right click on the microphone icon and click enable.
After that click configure and test.  Worked for me.  I can tell you that I wasted about 400 clicks before figuring that out.  No problems now.

Hope that works.

I'm really starting to wonder about this Vista test box of yours. Are you running Mobo sound or Sound Card? If you have a sound card installed must have mobo sound disabled in BIOS. Gurantee it will work after that.

No add-on sound card.  It ia a RealTek HD onboard.  It is not an uncommon problem.  I talk to people everyday who have the same exact issue.

You can wonder all you like.  Micosoft cannot figure it out either, yet.

That's what I have on a 64 bit Vista machine and it seems to work fine, no complaints in the arenas  :salute
