Turn left cross, turn left downwind
« on: March 21, 2008, 04:11:57 AM »
Turn left cross...for what???  theres 3 runways!!!...Turn left downwind...for what???  How do I know which runway they want me to land on....I see the red lines, but it doenst really correspond w/ where i am at.  Jus a lil confusing. turn left cross on SW runway, or turn left downwind for runway 180 would be helpful...  And now I dont get those vectors at all...not to the AI, not to land... I jus have to find the AI all by myself...

Other than that, nice start!!! The AI (when workin properly) should give a nice challenge and a great tool for one to practice when offline.

Did it ever occur that flight path/altitude/speed directions in the text buffer are given in a manner approximating realistic aviation? The visual flight path & "idiot" arrow dumbs it down for us on the clipboard.

I had read somewhere that CT will have training missions you will have to pass to move on to bigger and better things.  Correct landing procedures I bet are part of it.

Food for thought...

It's actually pretty fun, and if you take a few seconds to learn aviation terminology it's really neat stuff.  Your base leg is the turn before you're on final for the runway.  If you turn left for the base, it's a left base.  In the picture below, it's a right turn to the base leg, so it's right traffic--right crosswind, right downwind, right base, then final.

The tower will generally tell you to "make left traffic for runway 28 and report midfield downwind" for example.  That means you'll be landing on the runway that's facing 280 degrees on the compass.  You'll be making a left turn for the base leg before turning once more for final.  Your directional gyro/compass will be pointing to 280 when you're on final to land.

I'm sure that little things like stalls, leading shots with cannon/MG's are things some folks complain about.  Heck, why all that stuff when we could just have a game that we play with a mouse or gamepad from 3rd person view?  Because it's more immersive and realistic maybe.

Take a second and learn about things like this and you'll benefit hugely in the future.  Especially if you've ever for one second thought about going and earning your pilot's license.

That's why you'll be in the arenas when the rest of us are flying missions over Europe in CT. :rofl

it helps to super zoom in on the map and view the suggested flight path.

then just follow that until you get "cleared to land"

it is very good practice for better things yet to come.

Personally, if I cared to learn all this terminology and follow these types of instructions, I'd go buy MS Flight sim.

Even in CT, who cares how I land as long as I do land?

True.  Might be better yet to just stick to the playstation or x-box, yeah?

I don't own a console game system of any type. :)

I'll probably just do this and ignore the instructions in text.  :rock

It's his $15 guys, let him be..

I think it's pretty cool.  I understand you will have to complete missions like this correctlly to move on in CT, so I think it's good practice.

Warspawn, nice write up.

If some day the friendly collisions will be enable at CT, all this stuff will become more meaningful and important. Good for immersion anyways  :aok
