Honestly, I don't know. I've been told to skip anything below the 8800. Take a look at the ati 3850 and 3870 too.

Any card with GS in it can't be good. If it also has 'turbo' in its name, don't walk away. RUN!  :uhoh

That and 8300 level means it's 7-8 years old technology worth $45 today.

I'd recommend a 9600GT if you want a cheap but good card. Radeon 3850 is a good option also.

OTOH if you're only going to use it as NES pc that card will be enough.

That card will probably already run AH. The problem with HD 2xxx series is that they're older yield (meaning they suck power like crazy). This makes the cards more demanding on your powersupply. Having said that the HD2600XT is labeled as the best value for money in under $100 price category at tomshardware.com. So when the price gets taken into account that might not be a bad pick. I'm sure it will be a better pick than a 8300 in any case.

A good one is Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS...sucks a little more power than some but is good (can get the higher 7900s-7950 but price increases drastically)

If you want to go nvidia way the geforce 8600GT/GTS are better price/value than 7900GS.

GeForce 8600 GT(S) have faster clock speeds and support DX10 (go to a store and find me 2 games that require that) other than Clock speeds the 7900 GS has better abilities. Most everything ranks between the GT and GTS and something are better than GTS...Fill, rate, Memory interface, Bandwith, Pixels per clock (peak)...all those are just below or above the 8600 GTS (i just spent 4 weeks doing research for a new one...sorry nerd here  :D).  Only problem with 7900 is that it requires a direct power source from the PSU.

It seems that the 7900GS is slightly faster than 8600GT but apparently they also have a price difference. 8600GT competes in sub $100 category. If you go over $100 there are already other viable options like Radeon 3850.

One notable thing about 8600GT is that it comes in two versions, one with GDDR2 memory and the other GDDR3. Only the GDDR3 model is worth buying.

Look around i got my 7900 for 90$  :D...but i think it was only a week-long sale (or they sold out) but if you want to go over 100$ the GeForce 8800 is 300$ or more (anyone find it for less?)

I got my 7900GS for $95.  I'm very pleased with it.

Matched up with a low end core-duo (E6300), 2GB DDR2 ram... I get 65-75FPS on AH (Max settings, 1280X1024, 1024 HIRES textures).  Before the latest patch I MIGHT drop to 50FPS on rare occasions, but after the new patch I have yet to see it drop below 65 (odd.. my FR actually went UP with the new update!)

FSX I get 25-35FPS at about 3/4 settings (also 1280X1024).

Everything else that's graphics intensive are older programs, and easily fly by at 75FPS at max settings.

I just can't justify the cost of 8800 cards for the two games I run that might actually use it...

My Mom has a PT Cruiser, it has been tricked out with an SRT Neon 4 cylinder, dual exhaust and a 2 into 1 type header 2 exhaust ports per exhaust pipe. The grille has been replaced with a billet grille and the front nose clip/grille section has been cut and moved out 7"s to accomodate the supercharger. It has 4 wheel disc brakes (oversized with 4 piston calipers) with chassis strengthening/suport truss across the front struts over the engine.  lots of other  beefed up suspension parts,  racing parts added on............ btw my mom is 63 ys old and drives like Kyle Busch ..ROFL....

The dang thing is a bit hair raising when you floor it at around 65 mph and you feel the supercharger kick in and sucks you into the seat, watching the speedometer spinning up quickly pas the 140 mark....... it does not say cruiser anywhere on it though....it just says PT.......

sorry for the hi-jack
