Naturally I don't have my Lend-Lease fighter book, but I DID re-read bits of it.  194 P-47s made it to the Soviet Union, roughly split between -22 and -27 series IIRC (one razorback and one bubble top).  They were used on a number of recon and strike missions whose results were not recorded, so there is some debate if they actually saw combat or not.  In any event, they were used on combat missions.

The Brits also sent over a number of Mustangs (4 I believe).  Other VVS aircraft that need skins include SpitV and IX.  One of these days I'll try to have the book and my notebook open at the same time.

P38s!?  I'm triple absolutely POSITIVE they saw combat, so skins are a MUST!!

I've seen other references to the Soviets re-building crashed P38s and flying them, so that's not hugely surprising.  Having the P38L in 173IAP (for entertainment) is different, though. 

Here's something that might be interesting..."Some photos available at the book on Russian - author Kotelnikov Vladimir - "Americans at Russia" - subname "Americans airplanes at Russia"".  That would be worth a read (yes, I can read books "on" (in) Russian).  I'll get the Wife-Ack to ask someone back home to try and get it for me.

Wing tanks are for vodka.  Have to keep up your stock of black bread and pickled herring, too.

Apparently they flew it around the airfield, did stunts, stupid SAPP tricks, and otherwise made a toy out of it.  The REAL bummer is the utter lack of F4Us in green.  Might have to make one anyway.
