P51-B Skin Question
« on: March 26, 2008, 12:24:07 AM »
I am trying to confirm this profile.

Source: Fighters of the United State Air Force - From World War I Pursuits to the F-117
Unit: 355th FS, 354th FG, 9th AF, USAAF
Serial: GQ-Z (43-6369)
England, Late 1943.

If anyone has a collection or book of P51-B profiles I would delighted to see any info on this bird. I have spent a good day researching everywhere I can think of. After all day I haven't been able to find even a mention of this aircraft. Is there a chance that this is a color mix up? To me it looks like this could be a PTO skin. The info given is fairly specific so I still have some hope tho.

Based on the squadron and aircraft codes (GQ Z) I'd say that's an ETO bird. I'm not aware of any PTO aircraft that used those codes.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

It is what it is. 355th FS, 354th FG, 9th AF.  First Merlin 51 Mustang unit in the ETO.  Late 43 early 44 standard ID markings for all ETO 51Bs were like that.
