I'm with others, take it away.  I blew through about $80 one month because of texting and I paid every cent of that back to my parents.  Guess what, I don't text anymore!  Oh and the fact it takes me an hour to type anything, just freaking call me.  It's bad enough we have to use phones to communicate, let's make it even more impersonal and send little messages.

I’d like to point out the quality of writing of these four youngsters.  Note how the pro texters write versus the non-texters.

the best bay is to disable the text by making them pay for it they problaly will stop or/and get mad at you thats what my dad did although i never got text

cmon you old people are lame!!!!
its just one thing you cant figure out. nothing bad about texting at all.
texting makes the conversation span out and you can do other things while not having to carry a phone in your ear. just let her/him do it, it cant hurt her.

and kids do need cell phones!!!! when you want to call your kid to come home then you simply call them. if you didnt have anyway to reach your child at 11pm you would get a lil scared. or if they get in a car crash they need to have some thing to reach you. its better for your kid to have a cell then not have 1. trust me on this!

I got through High School without ever sending a text message. I'm not old either, I just graduated last year.

The idea that kids need them is total BS. They are nice to have, but that doesnt mean they NEED them.

90% of the text messages I have seen sent were between students during class. That is why 91% of students can fail a test, because they are texting the whole darn day.

If you have a girl then you are even worse off. They go nuts with the texting. My younger, she's 12, managed to rack up a $700+ bill JUST with texting.

Personally I feel that most cases that people use text they either should not be communicating anyway (particuarly those who text and drive), or they should get off their butt and go talk to the person.

Make them pay the bill or just take away the phone.

I have the feeling when we have a major EMP hit the States, a lot of younger people are going to commit suicide because they'll think their life is over.

More than likely the solution hit him just as he pressed the "post" button.

This old guy knows how to text, I just choose not to. If someone needs to talk to me, call and talk to me.

Kids do NOT need cell phones. I never had one when I was growing up. If my parents needed to call me to come home they called over to my friends house where I was at. If I wasn't were I told them I was going to be then I had some explaining to do. Also if a kid gets in a car crash, the police will contact the parents. It goes along with the job description.

I will NEVER give my kids cell phones. When they are old enough and they want one, well they better get a job and be able to pay for it themselves. Too many kids today feel they are entitled to all the modern marvels of todays society. I was brought up on the principle that you have to earn what you get. There will never be any freebies with my kids. They might think I'm an SOB now but in the long run they'll understand why. I know I have more respect for my parents now that I'm one myself. I figure it's not my job to be my kids buddy or best friend. It's my job to be their dad, and if that means I have to smack them in the back of the head every now and then to get their attention, or be the bad guy by telling them no when they want something, well that's just a part of the job.

Back on track with the thread though, if you feel your kid must have a cell phone, change the calling plan to only allow voice calls and even then I woud limit the number of minutes. If they go over the minutes the phone cuts off. On that note you also tell them that if you ever try to call them and can't get through because they've used up all their minutes that month on BS phone calls, your going to throw the thing in the trash. Make your kid responsable for their actions and hold them to it. The best lessons learned in life usually involve a little pain, so hit em where it hurts.

I would suggest that you tell the kid to refrain from doing so.
If that doesn`t work you might want to look somewhere else for the problem. It isn`t the kid.

What is wrong with kids today? When I was around 12 or 13(this may be a bit old for this poster), I would have HATED being stuck with a phone, we wouldnt have ever done half the fun toejam we did, if our parents could track us down. Hell at that age your not supposed to really want to be around your parents much.

I can not imagine, having a phone and having to clear every little thing with my parents, that would have been hell.

Kids nowadays seem like a bunch of little mommas boys.

Of course that'll make your child text the police and have you arrested, but hey---

We got one big texting bill on my daughter's phone so we switched to a plan that has unlimited texting. Problem solved.

I agree, texting really isn't necessary.  I receive text messages, but when I get them I just call the person back.  I don't really like using my TALKING DEVICE to type on, that's what email is for.

Texting is similar to drawing pictures  on a TV screen.
