Dunno RPM, I quit watching about 8 years ago when I realised a pass was something to celebrate in F1 rather than something to expect.  BRB, going to have a smoke....shhhhhh!

That would be incorrect ye of little knowledge. That is top race speed (overall average start to finish) and lap speed (average). They reach top speed of over 200mph going into turns 1 and 3. TMS is one of the fastest tracks on the circuit. They even considered making it a restrictor plate track because of the speed the cars reached.

The Texas track is a lot like Atlanta and Lowe's Motor Speedway, but there's one big difference. The asphalt at Texas has really good grip, and the race pace doesn't slow down. So the racing actually is quicker. Bill Elliott set a qualifying record in 2002 with a 27.80-second lap, which is almost 195 mph. That's an average speed, so driving off into the corners in Turns 1 and 3, the cars go well in excess of 200 mph.

What is with this 'turn 1', 'turn 2' , 'turn 3' and 'turn 4' I keep hearing?

The only oval type coarse that has 4 turns is Indy.

My 7 year old nephew was watching the race at Martinsville with me on Sunday and asked me if the announcers failed math as he could only see 2 turns.

Ok, try and follow.

What you see as a curve is actually 2 turns.  The car is setup for the entry into the curve (turn 1) and then is setup for the exit (turn 2).  Both of the actions typically are the opposite of each other (slow down, turn wheel into turn, then accellerate, turn wheel out of turn).  Both actions require completely opposite inputs.  Thusly, what looks like a turn is actually 2 seperate series of action.  Comprende?

The sharper curves of the road course mean that the driver only makes major changes to the degree of turning the car is doin once for that curve, meaning he only makes 1 turn.
