Need help finding cool stuff to see and do in Texas
« on: April 01, 2008, 07:34:51 PM »
There's an incredible girl coming to see me just before I take off for Iraq.  I need to show her an unforgettable time so that she's thinking about me as much as I'll be thinking about her while I'm over there.  I've got 3 days... she flies in on Tuesday morning and leaves Friday morning.

Here's what I've got so far: pick her up from the airport in Austin on Tuesday, spend the day in Austin or maybe head to College Station, which she also wants to see.  Probably head back to Killeen that night, as I have to go in to work for a few hours Wednesday morning.  After that... we've got most of the day Wed, all day Thurs, and then I have to get her back to the airport Friday morning.

A bit about her: she loves road trips, camping, hiking, and generally outdoorsy stuff.  She's an explorer, whether it's little New England villages, big cities, or out of the way parks.  She wants to try a Texas steak and loves red wine, so I'm thinking I need to find a good steakhouse in Austin.

Besides that, I just need options.  State parks, or anything else that's generally cool.  Just throw me some ideas, please.  It's important enough to ask on an internet game bulletin board. :)

Several good Steak Houses in Austin....

Take her to to Downtown....U.T. is there and you'll see plenty of "Differant" types down there. Zilker Park is pretty good. Colorado River is right down town. If time permits...take her to the Hill country...Burnet...llano...BB Q. THE BEST!!!!!

Hills Cafe has decent Steaks.....Texas Land and Cattle company....San Francisco Steak house is not bad...but more show than Mooo.

Sea Food try Captains....on I35 near Baby A's. GREAT BROILED CRAWFISH!!!!!

BBQ local...Elgin...Southside Market....

The Hill country drive would be nice...Lake Buchannan...

Lake Travis....Go out 620 tho...prettier drive....Highway 2222 to 620 would be REAL nice drive.

Baby A's has margarittas...pretty good....Carlos and Charlies out on the Lake...not bad....

Tons of things to do....

Hope this helps

I've already been there, clerick, and I wouldn't dream of subjecting her to that (or going through it again myself).

Sorry Diablo, she's an only child.  :)

Powell: Yes Rock.

Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

What about San Antonio?
Riverwalk & all of the nice restaurants that includes are unforgettable. :) If you go there, Dick's Last Resort is a fun place :)  Fredricksburg is awesome (includes the Hangar Hotel, which is worth a google search ~ you'd love that place too *grin*)

Don't be too stressed out about taking her to the perfect places though, Tarmac. If she's traveling to see you by plane before you leave, it's you that she wants to see... not the local sites. :)  So no matter where it is that you choose to go ~ enjoy ~ and take a camera so you both have photos to take away with you of your visit with one another!  :)

Oh, there's this awesome *pick your own* farm in  Marble Falls, which is also some of the most beautiful country I've seen.

We pick blueberries & strawberries by the bucket when in season. They rotate fields, so there's ALWAYS something to pick. Also, they've got the most awesome pumpkin patch in Texas :)  I'll have to look up the name of it later & add it on.  Y'all youngsters don't get out & do that stuff... so it would be a nice change of pace :) and a surprise :)

www.sweetberryfarm.com
See their website to see what is in season for picking. :)

Directions:
To Sweet Berry Farm, Marble Falls, TX From Killeen/Harker Heights/Copperas Cove:
1)Go WEST on US-190 to Lampasas, approx 30 miles.
2)In Lampasas, stay straight to go onto PLUM ST. approx 3 blocks.
3)Turn LEFT (south) onto US-281 to Marble Falls, approx 35 miles.
4)Turn RIGHT onto FM 1431.  Follow approx 1.5 miles.  Just past Texas Granite you will come to a red light.  This is the intersection of FM 1980 (Tobeyville road), turn RIGHT and go about 1.2 miles to Sweet Berry Farm on the right.

Eat.

Drink.

Make Mary.
