Low frame rates
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:46:59 AM »
This may not be a new topic, but I have searched for threads that address this and have not found any that seem to describe my problem. For the past few weeks my frame rate has been dropping (5-15 fps) when I am viewing a lot of action such as planes, trains, flames or planes flying through flames. The low frame rate will persist for up to a minute after the view clutter is reduced to a less stressful (fewer planes, not looking at planes). It does not happen the first time I fire guns or at any predictable time. I always use task manager before I start and can get my processes down to 4 next to my name and about 28 system processes. Virus scan is off, all auto updates and such are off. I don't really understand the delete and rebuild cache thing but will try if I can find instructions. I will post any system information that will be helpful. Thanks in advance for any advise you may have.

For the record, I use an AMD processor and I have a steady 40-60 (60 pegged at monitor refresh rate) and it never dips below 40.
So before you go bashing products, let's see your other system specs. As I know there are a lot of other AH er's with AMD's that don't have any problems.

Zilla, all you have to do to delete cache and let it rebuild itself is to navigate to the HTC folder/Aces High II. There you will find a folder named cache. Delete that folder and once you open AH again it will rebuild the cache. I also recommend de-fragging your hard drive afterwards. Personally, I think the defrag that comes with windows is trash (plus it doesn't like RAID arrays) so I bought O&O defrag. I think it works much better.

But, in your case I'm sure the windows defrag will be sufficient. One last thing, before you go and post your dxdiag just give us the basics about your PC. What operating system are you running, how much RAM, what CPU, video card and sound card.

Noted:  I will place that info into my AMD Fanboy file??
BTW I never dip below 60fps either.  MAYBE 58...
Sorry, I'm sure you think your AMD rules, but honestly if you read what I've read about AMD - down to the engineering levels of the cores etc - then you might think otherwise.  It's just not the same.  They are cheap and great for that.  Hey it may be due to the methods or how the hardware is built AROUND the chips...but it still comes down to usability overall.  Intel wins out and in fact, in several data centers the Intel systems are always the first to go...because noone wants to deal with the headaches and hiccups of the AMD's if they have the choice.

I disagree with your belittlement of AMD.I used Intel puters for a lot of years, and I had no problem with them.As my years of computing went on,and I became comfortable with trying a complete build,I opted to try AMD because they were less expensive. My last several puters have been AMD,and they have never let me down. You sound like you are well read on computing knowledge,so I won't challenge you there. If you have the money,Intel is prolley the way to go.I just like building puters now,and I can afford AMD's.Trouble free,?I've never had a major issue yet,tho this freezing and stuttering since the last patch has me pulling my hair out,but I blame the patch for the problem.

Folks, this is a technical support forum.  It would be appreciated if you leave any prejudices about hardware at the door.  The only goal here is to help folks get the most they can out of what they have and make it as stable as possible.

If you want to discuss the various merits aof any particular hardware, we have a forum for that.

That said, a DXDIAG output would be helpful.  Also, what does the in-game 'Variance' line (Net Status) look like?

Do a search for it.  Vista places files and folders in special places.  Hide and seek is still popular today.

You can circumvent this behavio, by right-clicking on the Aces High II startup ICON and selecting "Run as administrator".  Of course, ig you do it now, all your config files will no longer be valid as the files and folders will be created in the correct locations.

Not sure what you mean.

If you run the game as a regular user, with Vista's User Access Control Enabled, then all the files and folders that are created by Aces High II will be placed in a VirtualStore directory.

If you use the "Run as Administrator" option, then all the files and folders created by Aces High II will be placed in the regular locations in the game's installation root folder.

You can set the option for the game to always "Run as administrator" as well.  If you do this, then just move the files from the VirtualStore Vista created back to the root game installation folder.

I will be writting up a full procedure with all the caveates for Vista users.
