Ok Bike tech weinies Heres a good one
« on: April 02, 2008, 05:38:45 PM »
My bike ran out of gas on the reserve. We've all done it.Dont lie. I was 100 yds from home so I just pushed it home.Went to my roomates shed and grabbed the gas can.Her ex had a weed wacker.Took it with him but left the gas oil mix can there. Now I know what your thinking and your right.I put the mixed in.Well Ive drained the tank.Unhooked the gasline all the way to the gas filter,on the lower end of the bike and tried useing starter fluid.Heres my question. How badly is this gonna gun the carbs? Its a 1100 "99" Shadow Ace Tourer with the 1100VTC engine. It fires with the ether, but it wont stay running. An I better off getting someone to tow it and just have it in gear and on and try to work the rest of the gas out?? :furious :furious

Should have drained the carb before trying to start it. Best thing you can do is clean the plugs till it fires/starts or take it to a mechanic. Gas oil mix really shouldn't shut down your bike but if you have injectors instead of a carb you might be screwed. I'd say more than likely your plugs are fouled, just take them out and wire brush them off. You might have to do that a couple times till the oil gets burnt out of the system. I did that with an old 72 honda i had and all it did was keep fouling the plugs. Would not surprise me that if you pull a plug you'll find it gunked up with oil depending on the mix he had in the gas can.

You fouled the plugs. Must have been a real rich mixture for any mixed boat gas we had left (5-10gal) after a race would out in the tow vehicle and never had a problem.

Running gas through should clean out the carbs.

Can always try some of that stuff you put in the tank when putting it away for the winter.

Cant get to the bowl drains without taking the tank off so I guess I just have to keep hitting it with the starting fluid till it clears up.A royal pain in the arse.

I put 17 miles on my bike today; didn't burn a drop of gas (not that there's anything wrong with that).

This really shouldn`t be that big of a problem.
Even though the gas is mixed with oil it still will ignite quite well.
A kitchen match works well. The oil will have a tendency to keep the flame going long enough for the plastic to start burning. From there on it`s all down hill and your problem should clear up nicely.
If that doesn`t work, you can always have faith in the fact that it is fastly approaching prime run time.
There will always be one somewhere who is looking for one of these for their Honda bash.
Just take your time, ask around and in the mean time keep it covered with a tarp to avoid embarrassment.

That's Odd Dre.
IIRC you should be able to reach the drain valves with a loooong 1/4"flat blade screwdriver?
In any case taking the tank off should be a 2 minute job.

A couple of things here:

#1 Have you put fresh gas in the tank, or are you still trying to make it run on old pre-mix?
If you haven't done it yet fill the tank with fresh gas. (gas can go bad sitting in a gas can very quickly, lots of variables though).

#2 Get away from that starting fluid, you can "prime" the engine with gas if you really need to. I use a small baseter (like for cooking) and as little gas as possable, but you shouldn't need to do this to get the bike running.

#3 Check the fuel filter (if you haven't already), The gas can might have had a large quantity of crap in it, which now has a new home in your motorcycles fuel tank. Most bikes have a filter at the fuel petcock.

Hope this helps

Another thing you may want to consider is clean your, carb, fuel line, and tank with IPA. It will remove
the oil residue and it evaporates after a short period of time.
