"Read Only" Properties

Some reason all of the folders on my PC are marked as "Read Only." I cannot use the Terrain Editor because of this (which is kind important because thats what gives me that little CM Staff designation on the forums).
Every time I try to change the properties it looks like it does it, it asks if I want to change the properties to this file only or all files in the folder, I've tried both options and it does not work.
I use Windows XP. Are there any settings anyone would be aware of that would cause the folders to be marked as read only?

Did you drag or copy the files from a disc?  That almost always changes the attributes to read only.  I've found that clicking a folder to change it's attributes doesn't help.  You need to get to each file. 

Open the folder, click on the first file, scroll to the bottom, hold shift and click on the last file to select all the files within the folder (but don't select any sub-folders, you'll have to repeate this process for each of them), right click, click properties and unclick read-only.  Click OK.  Your files should now all be writeable.

I recently dragged a whole bunch of files off a disc and getting them back out of read-only mode one folder at a time was a b****.

That's funny. I don't think I've had that problem. I can drag files off a CD-ROM and once they're on the HD they have normal access. It's only when they're on the disc itself that they stay read only.


At least, that's how I remember it. I've not had to go in and uncheck "read only" in years.

Might be only on my Win98 machine now that you mention it.

Raptor do you have XP Pro or XP Home? You cannot permanently remove the 'read only' tag from the folder itself. However that's normal and not a problem.

If you have XP home you need to open some file folder, select tools/folder properties/view and uncheck 'use simple file sharing'. After that choose the folder where you have the terrain editor, choose properties with right mouse click and select the 'security' tab in properties.

In there make sure your username is on user list and if it is, that it has all privileges to the folder. If every privilege is not checked (excluding special permissions) then select your own user and click on the 'full control' and 'allow' checkbox. Go to advanced properties, check box 'replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects' and press 'apply'. Then select 'owner' tab, select your own username from the list then check 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' and press apply.

After that you have 100% access to the folder contents and you're the effective owner of the files. This is often necessary to do also in OEM installed Vista installations because OEM installed Vista contents is not owned by the user who uses it by default.

If your terrain editor won't work after this, your problems are not permission related.
