Ow. Ow. Ow.
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:31:57 PM »
Some of you who work sedentary/office jobs may be able to relate to this.

I work Thur/Fri/Sat 9pm-7am overnights at the local hospital in IT Support.  Some nights are busy, helping crazy-busy Doctors and Nurses with technical issues/questions.  And some nights, all is quiet on the northern front.

So you sit.  Read.  Surf web.  Get a few assignments done, etc...a lot of sitting time.  And it seems all the chairs here seem to induce slouching/bad back positioning.  By the end of your shift (10 hours...yeargh...) you are stiff and sore.  Despite stretching every hour or so...back/shoulder pain.

A coworker suggested making an appointment with the massage therapist.  Not bad, I usually see them every few weeks and its awesome.

Man, this time...ow.  Ow.  Ow.  Yep, she said the back was sore, tight and all that massage talk for "What the heck did you do to yourself to be all knotted up?".  "Just sat in a chair most of the night!"

This has to be mother nature's way of greeting me to the 40s in 2 years  LOL

So tonight, its move around every half hour, stretch...and pop 2 Motrins every couple of hours.

Anyone else get this wonderful stuff in their line of work?

Climbing on top of helicopters all day. Crawling into the transition section which reeks of JP-5 and hitting your head, knees, and every other body part on unseen objects. Squeezing between the auxiliary tank and the sound proofing to take a cannon plug off or do some wire repair. Rarely a day Im not sore or in a good deal of pain. Good thing for free medical.  :rock

Oh yea, all the cancer causing agents I work with (Yea yea, everything causes cancer). Youd be surprised at how much a aircraft is bad for you.  Or the fact if/when I have children they will be all girls. I know it now. Its fact. All males in my job field that have worked on radar systems for aircraft only have girls.  :cry

Might be time for a job that doesn't have you sitting on your bellybutton 10 hours a day.  Go for a tech job at the hospital... or better yet, away from the hospital.  Doctors are whiny and nurses are crazy...especially the late shift ones.

what about the poor guy who has to perform PMS on the salinity cells in the engineering spaces in the bilges most of the time, usually an IC striker.  that's one nasty job there and it is performed every month.

First do you exercise every day? Sit ups and back strengthening exercises will help a lot. Also ask the massage therapist about back support braces. You can usually get them at health stores ect.. I'd also think about putting in a safety/health complaint to whoever is in charge, sounds like they need to get some new chairs. $100 bucks or so for ergonomic chairs is cheap compared to the thousands they could pay in health claims.

LePaul,

Get offa your lazy butt and go to the office supply store or even a discount store and buy yourself an office chair with lumbar support. You should be ablke to do this for under $100.00 easily if you do any shopping around at all. I did just that and got one for $59.00 that has saved me a ton of back pain and I have 2 blown disks.
