x52 hatswitch
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:19:36 AM »
I am having a problem with my top hatswitch where it only works as four different buttons. If I pull back on the hat, the game thinks I am pushing forward. When I test the buttons within the driver applet, the buttons register as they should. I only have the problem with the game. It would be really nice to get this working becuase I use that hat to control looking up and I am limited to only a few directions. Is anyone else having the same problem. Don't let this post turn you off from the x52, it is an amazing joystick.

Check the Joystick settings in AHII.   You can program them there also. Look to see if they have definitions that are contrary to your profiler settings.   I only use the "profiler" software on the rotators and sliders where I want to define some banding.  All other switches and buttons I have programmed in AHII setup.

I have already tried to program them in AHII. When you press up on the hatswitch, it goes to button 15. When I pull down on the hatswitch, it also goes to 15. I do not have this problem while testing my buttons in the driver applet. The buttons do work properly, I have proven that to myself. Don't worry, I have the latest driver and I already use XP.

PS - Thank you for responding. I appreciate any help I can get with this. Although, I will be getting a trackir eventually. That is the easiest solution and a good excuse to get one.

Hmmmmmmmmm...that is strange.  When you loaded the latest version of the drivers, did you remove the previous version first?  I have read on Saitek's forums that sometimes registry entries do not get removed completely, or updated completely.  You may want to go there forum and do a search there.   Also,  are you running the latest profiler software?  The lastest just shows a spreasheet of "Modes" and the settings under each.  IMO the NEW software is very user unfriendly....I like the older profiler that gives you a "clickable" picture of the stick and throttle...click on the button...it takes you to it!   Much easier with the old software.   You may want to uninstall the NEW profiler and install the OLD software.

The "calibration" window doesn't show the "result" of a profile.   So you may have the up and down hat profiled to the same funciton.  The only way to check is look in the Profiler Software.   So make sure that the fields for the "HAT" are blank, apply the profile, then go back into AHII and see if it still wont program.

you can download the OLD profiler from here: ftp://ftp.saitek.com/pub/software/sst_171006_32.exe

Hope it works for ya.

In the Profiler software, there is an option to set the hats as either 4 way or 8 way. If you use the SST, make sure you have selected that to function as an 8 way. I use the SST for everything but the control axis and a couple of other commands, and have had no issues with hat function. I have the upper stick and throttle hats as 4 ways, and the lower hat as an 8 way. Works fine, using the more recent drivers I dl'ed off Saitek's site, and whatever version of the SST that shipped with the stick on the included CD. Might want to try newer drivers- although I don't now, I tried programming the stick in AH, then dl'ed newer drivers, tried again, then went with the Profiler. Changing the drivers affected how AH "saw" my controls, like not allowing the clutch key to be programmed, and also changed how the slider behaved.

I haven't used the profiler yet so it is the default settings. I will have to check it out. I will let you know how it goes.

I'm wondering if this is a direct-x issue.

I do not have that problem with my X52 (I do use the profiler, but not for my hat switch functions... which is mapped in-game).

However I used to have a X45.  This I did not used the profiler for.  The "Mode" switches on the throttle would report as a button presses, and I had these programmed to do various things.

I remember one of the mode switches were being reported weird within AH.. Example:  It listed.. buttons 20, 21, and 22 normally.  If I plugged the joystick in AFTER the computer booted up, AH would report as "buttons 20, 21, 21"  (YES 21 twice) for one mode switch, and the other was non-functional.

If I plugged the Joystick in BEFORE turning on the computer, everything worked just fine... and yes I repeated this scenario many times over... very strange.

That was when DirectX 9.1? (I think) was out, and the next DirectX update (9.2 I think) completely fixed the problem.

I think DirectX translates the joystick commands into a language AH can understand, and something is goofy is going on here...at least that's my theory.

Some same issues here.  Top hat only works as 4 way in AH2.  The CP for the SST software acknowledges all 8 positions, though.

Same for pinkie.  SST software confirms input, but no-go with AH2.  I just started experiencing this problem after un-mounting everything   the do a thorough cleaning (quit smoking, needed to get rid of dust and smell) of my Comp/ area.

Anybody figure this one out yet? Having same problem, POV 2 shows 8 way in Cont. Panel, only as 4 buttons in game.

Good, this means the problem is not only with my stick. It sounds like you are having the exact problem I am. The top switch only registers 4 buttons in AH. My trackir will be here in a couple of days so after that it doesn't matter as much.

It just started working fine last nite. No idea why. I programmed it for my up views in SST a couple of days ago which had no effect at the time. Now it's back to normal. Stymied.

Solved -

You have to use the profile software with this joystick. Without it, you get the problems I was seeing. I was trying to shave the amount of apps I have running on my system by only using the drivers within Windows to configure the joystick. Now that I am using the software, I get the full functionality of the joystick. Even my lights all work. Silly me. Thanks for all of the help guys. It all helped me realize I was wrong for not using the software.

Both hat switches on mine are broke....in the game they stick to right view.
I can look around but when I let it go it goes to right view.
In windows game controls the two hat switches are glitching.
