Okay I saw a picture that looked like a P-47 taking off an Aircraft carrier. Anyone know if this is true. Its pretty cool

Its true. Ive got 5 or 6 pictures of it. But it wasnt common. It was a mission ferrying P-47s into combat in the MTO IIRC. They werent 'carrier based', and fall into the same category as the Doolittle Raid.

You sure it was the MTO?  I recall they were in the Pacific.

Could have been. All I remember is that wherever they were being ferried to started with the letter 'M'  :confused:

318th FG Jugs were launched off the USS  Manila Bay and USS Natoma Bay  June 23 1944 in support of the invasion of Saipan and were landed on a newly constructed airfield before the island was completely secure.

Many aircraft of various types were flown of jeep (escort) carriers throughout the WWII theaters.  This included Africa, the Med, Europe (even into France post D-Day), and especially the Pacific.  P-40's. P-47's and many 51's were delivered this way.

Woulda been cool to see in person!

I believe the only ones carrier launched were the P40s in North Africa and the Jugs for Saipan.  Jeep carriers were used to deliver planes such as the 15th FG P51s, but they were off loaded not launched.  The carrier launched Spits for Malta were land based birds too.

And crazy Canuck Jerry Smith was given USN wings from his American CV buddies for landing his near fully-laden Spitfire Vc back on deck when his 170 Imperial Gallon DT failed to give fuel. :D
